The last several years of development in Toronto have transformed neighbourhoods, creating new local skylines, filling in gaps in the urban fabric, and making for some impressive Throwback Thursday comparisons. This week's comparison takes us to a high-rise condo unit in the Distillery District, with views to the northwest, seven years apart.
On June 30, 2012, this view showed a handful of projects under construction. From left to right, the image below shows active projects at the time including the King East Centre in the foreground, and The King East, The Peter Gilgan Centre for Research and Learning, and Aura at College Park, increasingly faintly in the background.
On August 4, 2019, the buildings seen in the 2012 photo are all long complete, and have been joined by several new additions. From left to right, completed and under construction buildings adding to the shot are Yonge & Rich Condos, Residences at the RCMI Condos, Massey Tower, Post House Condominiums, Velocity at the Square, The Globe and Mail Centre, Pace Condos, Grid Condos, Dundas Square Gardens, Wellesley on the Park, Burano, Alter, 365 Church, FIVE Condos, Stanley Condos, and 411 Church. Dipping down from 411 Church in the distant skyline, East FiftyFive can be seen rising above grade. Back up to the distant skyline, the Bloor-Yorkville area skyline now looks much taller and denser with One Bloor East, Casa Condos, Chaz Yorkville Condos, Casa II and III, and X2 Condos. At the far right, East United Condos can be seen topped out along Parliament Street.
We will return next week with another look at the changing face of Toronto.
