Mayor John Tory's Toronto

Looks like he wants a new convention centre.

Toronto's Metro Toronto Convention Centre may feel like a massive labyrinth, but Mayor John Tory doesn't think it's big enough anymore, reports the Toronto Star.

In a conversation with Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne yesterday, Tory broached the subject of creating a new and improved convention centre. Neither he nor Wynne mentioned a possible location for this piece of infrastructure.

Tory did mention, however, that the city's lost out on major conventions over the years. He wants to work with the provincial government to get this project off the ground, ensuring Toronto has enough space for these types of events in the future.

Isn't the whole point of Hotel X to add accommodation and conference space at the Ex?

Accommodations yes, not so sure how much contiguous conference space it is adding - most of it is at Allstream (Automotive Building) next door and Direct Energy Centre (NTS).

Let's face it MTCC being split by the railway corridor is never that great an arrangement, and MTCC north in particular is a borderline dump.

Build a new convention centre OVER both the old convention centre AND the railway tracks.

Pricey, another way would rebuild the north section with hall built under the railway tacks connection them both the north and south end under the railway tracks, instead of that walkway above.

But I have a feeling he wants to sell the land in question, its probably worth hundreds of millions alone, could be another push for a casino, but more covertly. Can't say no to a casino if the north building is being torn down.

Not his to sell - doesn't Oxford own it?

That's correct.

They could always get rid of MTCC North and leave the South complex as is. Or maybe they could convert it into a multi-sport facility - think of how many ice rinks and basketball courts they could cram in down there...

It gets complicated. Oxford owns the north building, the land may be still owned by the feds, province or city to avoid property taxes, the south building is still owned by the province and the city, since the feds never had ownership of the south building, and the north building is managed by MTCC a joint province and city owned crown corp that manages both north and south buildings, even thought the north building is owned by Oxford.

The ownership of the land the north building sits on will be the determining factor, but still on depends what they want planed for the site, I don't think they're really going for another convention centre, but if I where to upgrade the facility, it would be connecting them fully together underground to make it feel like one building.

Toronto is actually lacking a convention centre befitting of a city of our size, influence and stature. So this is not something I am opposed to.

It may seem like a waste but convention centres do serve an important business function in similar cities to Toronto, and we do want to attract business events, conferences, expos and general business investment to our city. (Not to mention the tourist dollars that brings)
