I disagree. It's so far from Liberty that changing from a streetcar at Exhibition to the Ossington bus at Liberty/Atlantic isn't a valid transfer!

The name Exhibition works fine.

It is funny that you use that as an example because after a recent TFC match I was looking at the area and wondered, since the work is going on anyway, if they could not have found a way for the Ossington bus to come south down atlantic to the station...then go a short distance east into what is now that unpaved parking lot and then loop back north up Hanna back to Liberty. It would, I think, validate that transfer you mention and provide a direct TTC link to a train station with half hourly service in each direction.

As for the station name.....makes perfect sense to leave it as Exhibition....and then if ever there is a station on the Milton/KW lines that can be called "Liberty/Exhibition North".

There's space and plans between the buildings on Atlantic and the rail ROW to put in a new east-west road parallel to Liberty between Dufferin and Strachan (the class EA is underway - http://www.toronto.ca/involved/projects/libertynewst ). At that point, you could simply change the current Ossington loop from Liberty/Atlantic/King to Liberty/Hanna/"New Street"/Atlantic/King, with a stop at the GO Station tunnel entrance.

The TTC's transfer system makes no sense as it is.
Agreed. It was an example that Liberty isn't adjacent to the train station. (and perhaps not the best example the more I think about it).

BTW TTC is expected to issue the report to simplify the transfer system (Report on Fare Policy and PRESTO Implications) in July.

Long Branch GO on track for a makeover

The place where Toronto meets Mississauga along the lakeshore is about to become the transit hub where old meets new. The Long Branch GO station, one of the original stops on the Lake Shore West line, is on track for a makeover. The modernization plan, still in the preliminary design stages, comes as the main drag in the south Etobicoke neighbourhood prepares to add a little chic to its long-standing shabby image. New condos, townhouses and shops will inevitably bring more transit riders. Little has changed at the GO stop since it opened in 1967, replacing the CNR station near Brown’s Line. Now it’s about to enter the 21st century.

It will be 2016 before the station is fully refurbished. The modernization is about making Long Branch accessible with four new elevators, washrooms, tunnels and other modern touches such as a new ticketing office and canopies on the platforms, said Nick Spensieri, GO’s director, Multi-Modal Infrastructure. It’s one of only six GO stations that remain inaccessible and the plan is to have them all transformed by 2016. “The challenge is that, right now, the configuration of the platforms won’t accommodate the elevator shaft to meet the requirements of new elevator standards,†said Spensieri. About 2,700 riders a day use the GO station with about 10 per cent of them transferring to the TTC there. Mississauga’s MiWay buses also pull in at Long Branch. The TTC isn’t planning any major changes to its historic Long Branch streetcar loop that has remained virtually the same as when it opened in 1928 and now attracts about 3,000 riders a day.

Metrolinx is calling tenders
[h=1]RFP - METROLINX [/h]

PRE-NOTICE OF PROPOSED PROCUREMENTS BY METROLINX
FOR ITS GO TRANSIT SIGNALLING AND
TRAIN CONTROL IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM

General Information and Background
Metrolinx, an agency of the Government of Ontario, was created to champion, plan, develop and deliver a seamless, integrated public transit network in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA). Metrolinx has three major operating divisions: GO Transit, Union Pearson Express and PRESTO.
The GO Transit operating division of Metrolinx provides regional train and bus service in the GTHA. GO Transit provides train and bus service to a population of more than seven million people over an area greater than eleven thousand square kilometres.
As part of its program to upgrade and increase the capacity of its GO Train service, Metrolinx is undertaking a program of work to improve significant portions of its GO Transit Signalling and Train Control Systems. The contemplated work includes the replacement of the existing signalling system in the Union Station Rail Corridor (USRC) in Toronto, a new Train Control System that will integrate the control of the new signalling system in the USRC and the existing signals system on the GO Transit owned and operated rail corridors into one central control centre. It is Metrolinx’s intent that this program of work will be performed under three separate contracts, which will be awarded through three separate Request for Proposals processes.
Upcoming Requests for Proposals
Metrolinx intends to issue three Requests for Proposals for this program of works as follows:
Union Station Rail Corridor (USRC) Signalling Project The scope of this project involves the replacement of all signals, track circuits and cables in the USRC, the provision of all associated computer based interlocking and control equipment, the provision and installation of a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition system and local control panels, equipment cases, bungalows, signal bridges, cable routing and ducting.
Planned issue date of Request for Proposals: July 2013
GO Transit Train Control System (GTCS) Project
The scope of this project includes the provision of a new computer based train control system including all associated hardware, software and geographically specific data. The communication backbone network to be provided shall link the new train control system with all the existing GO Transit signalling systems on the GO Transit owned and operated network and the new USRC signalling system, as well as interfacing with the Canadian National and the Canadian Pacific Railways’ respective Rail Traffic Centres at the boundaries of the GO Transit territory. The new train control system will be located in the GO Transit Control Centre, which is being constructed adjacent to the Oakville GO Station. A second system, the Business Resumption Centre is to be provided for redundancy at a yet to be determined location, but will probably be located in the Greater Toronto Area.
Metrolinx may issue a Request to Pre-qualify prior to the release of these Requests for Proposals to develop a short-list of contractors to submit proposals for this project.
Planned issue date of Request for Proposals: Winter 2013
GO Transit Signalling and Train Control Technical Consultant Services
The scope involves the provision of expert staff to work as part of an integrated Program Management Team for the GO Transit Signalling and Train Control Program. The Technical Consultant shall be responsible for developing the Owner’s Statement of Requirements for the GO Transit Train Control System (GTCS) project as well as providing assistance during the Request for Proposals process and the evaluation of submissions. The Technical Consultant shall also be responsible for the management of the systems integration of both the technical and schedule aspects of the USRC Signalling System and the GTCS projects, oversight of the testing and commissioning activities for both systems and the review and recommendation of acceptance or rejection of the contractors’ submittals for both projects.
Planned issue date of Request for Proposals: Summer 2013
Additional Information
Please note that neither the successful contractor/consultant who is awarded the contract for the GO Transit Signalling and Train Control Technical Consultant Services, nor its sub-consultants and/or subcontractors, will be allowed to participate in the USRC Signalling Project or the GO Transit Train Control System contract. The reason for this exclusion is to avoid the conflicts that would be created as a result of the responsibilities of the Technical Consultant Services in relation to the work of the other two contracts.
The above referenced Requests for Proposals will be posted on MERX. It is recommended that interested contractors and consultants monitor the MERX website on a regular basis for any additional information relating to these Requests for Proposals.
This pre-notice does not constitute a binding commitment on the part of Metrolinx to issue any or all of the referenced Requests for Proposals or to proceed with any or all of the contemplated work. The statements and representations contained in this notice are not binding on Metrolinx. The contents of any Request for Proposals that may be issued may vary from the description of the projects, services and deliverables as provided in this pre-notice.

Erindale Parking Garage, new station and bus terminal July 19. Tons more up on site

With 6 weeks to go to get this new complex open, it looks like it will be ready sooner.

Hard to see what is taking place in the new station, but looks like it got the most work still to be finish.

They were pouring concrete for the new bus terminal area and it will have 3 bays on either side of the loop.

They still have to build the kiss & ride area and expect it will be north of this area. Not sure if it will be ready for Sept opening or have to wait until then once the current area parking and bus area are move.

First time I seen a large GO logo on any parking structure that have seen been built in the past 5 years. You sure can't miss it even if you are driving by it.

GO stations seem so basic that the private sector could probably build them. A developer could build a condo or office complex as a walkable community, and at the same time build the token platform and hut for GO. The parking would go underground. GO stations would no longer be marred by large parking lots and would be surrounded by transit-oriented development.

This was built by the private sector. It was design by the contractor building the station as a P3.

This and almost every station that has had a parking structure built for it should also had a condo on top of it.

Mimico is the only station I know at this time where a condo is going to be built on top of parking and includes a new station.

Long Branch was to be this way, but the developer back away for some reason and now the legion has to find a new buyer for the land. Go is going to rebuilt the station and parking lot without a condo to anchor it.

With the new development next to Burlington Station about to get off the ground, time Metrolinx partner with them and put all the parking lot on the south side underground and freeing up more development land including some retail at the base of the towers.

Erindale was a real miss opportune for condo and retail.

They were installing a tunnel at Bloor Station this weekend with all VIA trains using the Barrie Line. Still have to the last 25% on the west side and that may take place next weekend or the following weekend. May effect the specials and the reason for the extra headway.

They are moving Milton Line # 1 train next to the KW line that cuts back in north of the station. They are working on the track south of Bloor St and no indication where the swing will take place.

There is no crossover from #1 to #2 at the junction and the #1 has been out of service for the past few years in the first place.

Photos will be up sometime later this week.

I guess it wouldn't be physically possible to add a condo on top of the Erindale parking structure?
