GO Transit: Construction Projects (Metrolinx, various)

Going by Clarkson today, the structure is up with other work to be done before it goes into service late this year. Provision has been made to add another level or 2 at a later date.

Looking at Oakville structure, the GO logo is a lot smaller than the Erindale one.

I can't believe how slow the process is at Burlington and they still don't have the brick/block work in place yet. Some steel for the roof is in place with a lot more to be install.

No way this terminal/station will be complete for September, let alone this year and why March 2014 is being used now.

Sounds like there needs to be some house cleaning and coming up with real dates for these projects. I know the contractor and they are not a bad firm who has been able to bring projects on line as schedule or sooner. Could be some rethinking within Metrolinx design team causing these changes and slowing things down. It is a good way for ticking off riders as well being poor PR.

Mainly the cost and easier to get to the heating system for the station that have the snow melting system. Even for repair of non melting platforms. It also a safety issues since you can trip on other material to the point of falling in front of a train arriving at the station. You can pull the asphalt up at 9 am and have it back in place by 3pm for riders to walk on it where it will be the next day for concrete or other material.

From a distance, it looks like green construction tarp is covering the building.

End up by the Erindale Station and got some update shots.

The driveway is base asphalt and the bus terminal is pour.

Installing the # of spots empty sign at the entrance to the parking structure.

They did some paving at the front with a large GO logo on the front side now.

Honestly, I didn't even notice the asphalt platforms until someone talked about it on these boards. I couldn't care less, as the ashphalt is kept nice and smooth. It is when it starts to fall apart when I notice it, and when it starts to become substandard.

When spaces are as generic as GO stations are and many TTC subway stations, many people never think about it until they enjoy a city that did these things better. That city will be more prominent in their minds.

I'm all for good design, believe me, but I think asphalt platforms are a very trivial thing to worry about. The average commuter, which these stations are built for, only cares if the surface is level and clean. Besides, as best I can remember, all the SNCF platforms I saw were asphalt. But what stuck out in my mind, was how extensive their rail network was and how much ran on electricity.
