TTC: Streetcar Network

A few interesting tidbits from Steve Munro in: TTC Streetcar Network Changes in 2020

Sections of Dundas are now pantograph only, but with all the delays in upgrading the overhead not all of the 505 route is ready for pantograph use. TTC staff will be stationed at Dundas & Broadview to assist with pantograph to trolley pole switching. This operation will continue until Broadview from Gerrard to Danforth is fully converted to a pantograph-friendly design over the next few months.

The other big piece of news is that owing to work along the 506 route freeing up some cars, the streetcars return to Kingston Road in mid-May. There's quite a bit of 506 work in the west end to get through so this should last a while.

Yet another example of the TTC treating the streetcar network as a joke. Honestly, how are they bungling this conversion this badly? We're not talking weeks about converting the rest of the 505 line, but months. Who are they kidding here with this non-sense.

Seriously - the streetcar will have to switch from panto to trolley pole at Broadview? How bush league is this organization? So embarrassing.

Yes, it does show how far behind they are in the conversation but at least they are doing it unlike when it was planned to be done when the CLRV's and ALRv's were new. As for switching from Panto to trolley pole as I've been wanting to see this for awhile.

It makes me sad seeing grand old neighbourhoods like the Junction without their streetcar tracks.

Maybe some day...

Bets on the "late April" date staying in place? One would hope that with COVID-19 going around they could finish the central section soon enough.

(Also, any bets on when the Broadview section will be pan-ready?)

It has to be ready before cars return to 505, as it on a curve that will not support pans. Could bring down the whole intersection.

I thought the current plan was to station crew at Broadview to lower and raise the poles.
On hand said this while the other had say that. If you are going to do it right, then do it right as well been cheaper than having someone standing on the street in all kind of weather and dealing with COVID-19. Wait for the next update on this change over since TTC is good not doing thing right the first time.

Point taken. That being said, the Broadview section is clearly not scheduled to finish in April, so the options are either the pole changing crew at the TTC's claimed deadline, or another few months of busses.

I was always under the impression the intersection was fully rebuilt after the fire and rebuilding the section between Dundas and Gerard. The overhead was rebuilt years ago on Broadview. I watched them do both intersections and Broadview. A few more month of buses allows work to get done faster and streetcars fully in-service without someone on site 7/24
