Toronto St Regis Toronto Hotel and Residences | 281.93m | 58s | JFC Capital | Zeidler

The neon in that Scotia Plaza logo has been burnt out in that one section for a few years. I'll try to climb up there this week and replace it with a pile of carrots.

The BMO logo is barely legible. I wish they'd just bring back the original blue one. At least it was noticeable from miles away. This one is hard enough to read, within a short walking distance.

Nice article on all four 5-star hotels being built in Toronto.

Toronto’s luxury market receives facelift

TORONTO, Ontario—Long recognized as a world class city and global financial center, Toronto may now be getting a luxury hotel inventory worthy of its position. The 267-room Ritz-Carlton, Toronto opened recently—to be followed later this year by the 261-room Trump International Hotel & Tower Toronto; and next year by a 200-room Shangri-La Hotel, Toronto, and a new 259-room Four Seasons Toronto, which will replace an existing property.

Mickael Damelincourt, GM of Trump Toronto, said, “For whatever reason, Toronto has been ignored. It is the largest city in Canada, as big as Chicago, and has a good economy that has been more stable than other world capitals. It has the third largest stock exchange In North America and very expensive real estate. How could you not have luxury hotels when you see the number of luxury rooms in markets like Chicago and Los Angeles?

Why don't we use that method of construction for all buildings then if it will expedite the process? What are the advantages of building with concrete over steel, except cost? I would think developers would want to build as quickly as possible and make use of their properties. In this case, what buyer would want to wait 4 years for their unit to be ready? If I had to wait that long I'd probably have a change of heart and would want out of my contract.

My understanding is that the actual material cost difference of steel frame vs reinforced concrete is not really that big. But concrete has other properties which might make it desirable or reduce costs in other areas, such as acoustic dampening, fire resistance, mass damping, etc.

There is also the local labour force to take into account. In this area, there is already a very large pool of local labour that has experience in building concrete high-rise. That makes a big difference.

Is it me? Or does NYC love steel construction. As I can recall, bank of America, the new world trade centers, etc, all use steel. Does it also have to do with how large the footprints are for the tower and the Location restrictions or even cause manhattans an island (the soil underneath or is it all the same)

Anyway, nice article regarding the toronto hotels! Weird that all these major hotel brands went up at once, that's what I call a boom...
There are still some other hotels like a waldorf, mandarin oriental, w, etc that we don't have, but I don't see any urgency why they should built them especially after what we're just getting!

There is always that possibility with these four new luxury hotels inaugurating of another 1-2 big brand (5-star category) hotels eyeing Toronto.

Trump updates from today.

I never noticed this... The ramp seems to go BELOW GROUND, i thought parking was strictly above ground level?

First of all, great photos. Wow. Also weird to see people I know in the first one. Hah.

That would be the service entrance. The ramp goes down and turns north and then west. It's only about one storey below ground. Underneath the main lobby is a turntable / elevator / garbage area.

All of the parking is aboveground.

i was surprised how active the site was on a saturday, lots of noise, lots of people! a good sight! and that guy "watchdog" guarding the west ramp was kinda fun to see. i guess he directs vehicles at that entrance or something,

and what is actually below trump? (aside from that service area you mentioned), i know this thing goes down at least 3-4 stories, though it's not parking of course.

Anyway.

In all honesty, security doesn't do anything. They have actual labourers on site for traffic control.

I'm not too sure. I know that there is a small below-ground section that is accessible from the lobby / vodka bar. For washrooms, I think.

I've always assumed that there are electrical and mechanical rooms downbelow. Hmm.

Thanks for the pics, steveve. While I welcome another embiggened building in the core, I find the finishes less than cromulent.
