St Lawrence Market

After lots of to-ing and fro-ing with BIA, SLNA, Councillor Pam McConnell, The Mayor and the City Manager's Office the THSL Project is 'on hold' and they are (apparently) now prepared to install more suitable lighting. All work has stopped.

Good news!

Heritage Conservation District. The HCD Plan for St Lawrence was passed by Council last December. Predictably it was appealed to the OMB. At the pre-hearing last week it was agreed to go to mediation to try to deal with many of the issues. There are quite a few parties involved, the City, the neighbourhood association, developers, owners of historic buildings etc. The areas of dispute range from the boundary of the HCD to how property owners can do upkeep and maintenance. Some things can probably be solved through mediation but it seems likely that at the end the OMB will have some decisions to make. This is first of several HCDs covering mixed residential and commercial areas so precedents set here will be important elsewhere.

Alternations to Wellington and the Wellington/Church/Front intersection are up for approval by community council.

The proposal removes the majority of the travel/parking lane on the north side of Wellington from Church to Yonge, allowing a much
wider sidewalk with drastically improved growing conditions for trees, as well as new large TTC stop just east of Yonge.

Yes, this will be done (late 2017) after the City installs a new watermain and new TTC track on Wellington (early in 2107) it also removes the left-turn channel/lane on Front @ Church so that the sidewalk around the Flatiron Building can also be improved and the whole 5-Corners (Church/Front/Wellington) intersection improved. It is something that the neighbourhood association and BIA have been working towards for several years.

Cresta Restaurant at The Esplanade & Market has closed. Not surprising as their change from Pastizza to Cresta a year or so ago was accompanied by very significant price increases (and a very similar menu). It was good food but far too expensive for the area.

What's going on with the Burger King and Angelo's Coal Fired Pizza at Front and George? Closed for about 7 day, sign on pizza place says there was a flood but no sign of work or water or mess. Sign on BK says sorry for inconvenience but no reason. No response from phone calls or emails. Anyone know the real story? Angelos was a good addition to the neighborhood .

The site of the former Hank's Restaurant on Church Street between Front and The Esplanade has just reopened (or is just about to reopen) as MEXICAN cantina
