Rob Ford's Toronto

I always feel a draft when I see the name Kouvalis. If proven true (which it sounds like) that Baliao (and Grimey) were boozed up by casino lobbyists, it will look really bad - at least worth an integrity commissioner's investigation.

The interesting thing (to me) is how important the dates seem to be on the lobbying. "Both Besner and Wright registered to lobby Bailao and Councillor Mark Grimes on Oct. 15, the day of the arts ball." The party at the Thomson, presumably, went past midnight which takes you into the 16th and you get this:

"My registry covers any conversations that I had with any officials regarding MGM on that day. I had no conversations with any city officials that required registry on October 16th … I had no role as a lobbyist after the Mayor’s arts ball. I was on my own personal time the rest of the evening.”

That seems to me to be a "yeah we were there but not working...just having a good time" kinda comment.....one that seems to expect an look from the integrity commissioner.

Yeah right, they should know better. I have an even dimmer view of those who knowing violate the spirit of the law through the letter of the law.

Mind explaining why Ford's endorsement of the DRL is a bad thing? He's been pretty worthless as a mayor, but that's mainly because he's been unable to compromise and work with council. Unless I'm missing something, we have a situation here where both sides seem to agree.

The best way I can think of explaining this situation is.....a broken clock still tells the correct time twice a day.

Ford is definitely benefitting from the volume of scandals he generates. For any other politician in the world we would be well past torches-and-pitchforks time.

And if Baliao hadn't been stopped for DUI, the public never would have known about this after-hours meeting with casino lobbyists.

Now, she's in a bind. If she supports the MGM proposal it will look like she was influenced--and opponents will, no doubt, bring up the meeting that occured on the night she was stopped by police (something, I'm sure, she would like the public to forget about).

Who knows what other secret meetings are occuring involving well-monied casino lobbyists and city councillors (we know how much the Fords like back-room deals). We need some well-placed spies in the top restaurants and bars (the Baliao-MGM meeting was at the Thompson) in town.

The Globe and Mail: Fords in trouble for calling medical officer an 'embarrassment'

Toronto Mayor Rob Ford and his councillor brother are in trouble with a council watchdog again, this time for disparaging the medical officer of health on their Sunday radio show.

The mayor and Councillor Doug Ford criticized Dr. David McKeown on their Newstalk 1010 program on April 29 for a $60,000 report his office prepared recommending the city lower speed limits to protect pedestrians

Toronto’s integrity commissioner is recommending that council formally rule that Doug Ford broke the Councillor’s Code of Conduct and consider reprimanding him because the councillor refused to apologize.

In the mayor’s case, the integrity commissioner is only recommending a finding of fault, not a reprimand, because Mr. Ford sent a retraction letter shortly before the watchdog’s conclusions went public.

On the radio show, the brothers told listeners they disagreed with the MOH’s idea, then went on to criticize him as an overpaid “embarrassment” who had overstepped his bounds.

Doug Ford called Dr. McKeown “this guy” and twice asked, “Why does he still have a job?”

* * *

A caller towards the end of the show criticized the mayor for his comments about Dr. McKeown, pointing out that no other doctor would take the post for less than $280,000.

“I appreciate your call, but it’s actually over $300,000, so I guess we are going to agree to disagree, but you know what, that’s the great thing about democracy and I appreciate your calling in,” the mayor said.

Dr. McKeown’s salary is $294,302, according to the provincial sunshine list.

Yes, that and an endorsement by the Ford's looks bad on anything. Also, I'd hate for Ford to twist this around as though it somehow supports his "subways subways subways" rant. The right people should get the credit for the DRL and Ford it is not. I just want Ford gone.

Mayor Ford: "You don’t need a lobbyist register, an ombudsman and an integrity commissioner"

Before taking to the field to lead his Don Bosco Eagles into a high school football game in North York Thursday, the mayor told The Globe and Mail the city should get rid of them all and keep one lawyer on retainer instead to handle such complaints.

“You don’t need a lobbyist register, an ombudsman and an integrity commissioner,” he said. “They have 20 people, they’re tripping over themselves. They’re trying to make themselves look busy. I’ve never voted in favour of it and never would.”

I hear Jeff Lyons has already applied for the job.
