Rob Ford's Toronto

A picture of Rob Ford at Rustic Bakery just showed up on Twitter, not sure when it was taken. Just seemed interesting, what with the conversation many pages back about bakeries and the mafia and everything.

looks like a bakery / convenience store, or something...

maybe something to keep in mind?...

Loiero was the owner of the Rustic Bakery located at 318 A Rustic Road, Toronto.

http://www.yrp.ca/default.aspx?pg=e2c6a32d-6996-4e93-95d1-a8adddf63cdf

Who lured Loiero to a deadly rendezvous?

the murder of Loiero, a father of three, baker of fine bread, long- time associate of key Metro mobsters - and York Region's first homicide victim of 1996.

[...]

There are already countless theories about why Loiero was killed, but just a few facts are known for sure: mobsters wanted him dead badly and did a professional job of killing him.

And they left close to $5,000 on the body to let others in their world know that Loiero wasn't killed by a common robber.

He was there to pick up a picture of Hazel McCallion to give her for her birthday... which there's some unconfirmed chatter indicating the Ford brothers crashed uninvited.

i'd love to see that confirmed! i.e. please let that be true!

I don't think that's true. I think a lot of immigrants aren't particularly ideological. They care about basic things: lower taxes, but also better services that they rely on. Polls have shown that immigrants place high value on health care and education. For many, those services are the main reason they chose to move to Canada.

Or we might think of 'immigrants' as, you know, people?

Hi all,

I'm hoping to enlist some help for a YouTube project I'm working on, tentatively titled People, not Taxpayers. This is a project inspired by a number of posts I've seen here, mostly those relating to what we would like to see from attack ads. Rather than joining the "I hope someone does this" chorus, I've decided to take matters into my own hands. I am an experienced video editor and 'YouTuber', and while I have a number of videos in production already, I've been struggling to track down some source materials. Equally, I am open to ideas for attack ads that fit more or less within the format I've envisioned. With your help, I am hoping to prepare some 50 ~one-minute videos prepared in advance of the home-stretch of the upcoming election. This will allow me to release a new video, say, every week until the last month of the election, at which point videos will be pumped out daily. With enough traction, I think these videos could make a real difference (unless, of course, Ford winds up in jail before then, but I've almost given up hope that this will happen -- sorry MetroMan).

These videos will be targeted at two specific groups: 1. Those who perceive Ford as an honest person, as a 'straight shooter' who keeps his promises; and 2. Those who might grumble about Ford's disgraceful behaviour, but ignore it on the basis of their mistaken belief that he is a competent economic manager, or that he 'respects their tax dollars'. It seems to me that, outside of these two, not necessarily mutually-exclusive groups, there are not many people who can be swayed either way (i.e. 'Ford Nayshun' on the one hand, and the informed citizenry on the other).

By way of an example, both of these groups are well represented in a video I'm currently putting together on his pledge to cut the land-transfer tax. I have a number of videos wherein Ford, with great indignation, dismisses claims that he will renege on his pledge to cut the LTT. Compiled chronologically, these videos will demonstrate how, over time, he moves the goalposts so much that his original promise fades into obscurity. This video will close with a Ford voice-over, "another promise made, another promise kept".

Another almost-too-easy example concerns his transportation plan in general, and his ridiculous promise to have the private sector kick in $1 billion in funding. This one provides a particularly powerful demonstration of how utterly incompetent he is as an economic manager - beginning with the promise of a fully-funded miracle subway, and ending with a huge increase in property taxes. He also promised to have his Finch, Sheppard, AND Scarborough subways either completed or under construction by the start of the Pan Am games. Again, the video will close with Ford proudly proclaiming "another promise made, another promise kept"

These videos will be edited in such a way that no voice-overs or editorial interventions will be necessary. This is the most effective approach, in my opinion, as it shows how Ford contradicts Ford, and that it's not the media who makes him look stupid. Put in another way, I want to show Ford falling on his own sword. There will also be a heavy emphasis on the pre-crack scandal era, so as to demonstrate clearly that Ford was never fit to govern. Lost amidst all this nonsense hand-waving about him being entitled to a personal life is this very simple reality, so I want to avoid attack ads related specifically to the crack-scandal, except where they serve to highlight his serial dishonesty.

I am still working out many of the details, such as whether I will use my existing YouTube channel or start a new one, but send me a private message if you are interested in helping out. Alternatively, if you are working on a similar project of your own, perhaps we can establish some kind of common digital storehouse for source materials? I'm open to any and all ideas.

In the meantime, I am hoping that someone out there has the full, raw video of Ford's "oriental people work like dogs" rant. I have searched far and wide, and have only been able to find the below video, which is less than ideal for obvious reasons:

My suggestions:

Contact councillors about the moments they remember most during council, regarding Ford's outbursts, hypocrisy and other flaws. Two years ago, this probably would've turned up nothing, but there are so many councillors actively speaking out about Ford that they'd likely be willing to help out. They may be able to give you examples of votes/dates to look up from the council archives.

BUT…I'd avoid using the same old footage that's been going around for years ("Orientals work like dogs", "you won't get AIDS if you're not gay",public lynching re: shelter, etc.). Centrists have probably already seen it and written it off as a one-time thing. What's needed is new examples of consistency in his attitudes and actions.

You might want to point out the Woodbine Live! fiasco. "I know how to deal with CEOs of huge corporations - that's how I landed the largest development in Toronto's history." It's part of what he touted in his campaign as a success, but still hasn't been built (and now likely never will). Like the Scarborough subway extension, he loves to count his chickens before they hatch.

Contacting Smitherman campaign managers Bruce Davis and Jeff Bangs might be worth a try.

While this video is great on its own, you might want to try and track down some of the footage used in it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VS3buOr8Nm0

Europe is largely conservative by nature

Eastern europe and rising segments of western Europe have been trending towards conservatism and see immigrations and multiculturalism as failures.

That is a huge, huge generalization. For one thing, there is culturally and politically no monolithic, uniform 'Western Europe' or 'Eastern Europe' (what about central Europe, huh?) that such sweeping statements can always apply to.

And, that street poll was in the old city. Imagine if it had been in the suburbs.

At any given time when a station like City does streeters, there are a whole bunch of idiots walking around who either don't actually bother to vote, can't vote or who don't live in Toronto (and perhaps don't realize that Ford is not their mayor - I've seen comment board trolls talk as if Ford were 'mayor of the GTA', knowing or caring little of politics in their own Peel/Vaughan/Halton etc. backyards).

That's what I keep telling myself, anyway.
