Brief Evan Solomon interview with Daniel Dale's lawyer ...

http://www.cbc.ca/player/News/Politics/Power+%26+Politics/ID/2424050727/

Lots to be curious about here ...

Any lawyers out there know what the sequence of legal steps might be? Depositions? If no settlement after depositions, trial by jury or by judge? If there's a choice, who chooses?

I am guessing that Zoomer Media will settle very soon.

The Fords? Who knows? I imagine it depends on complex dynamics between Rob, Doug, Mom, and whatever lawyers get involved in the defense. It's possible that the Fords could settle if somebody can get the idea into their thick heads that this suit could be very costly if it goes all the way to trial. On the other hand, I can see them firing law firm after law firm until they find one incompetent or unethical enough to tell them what they want to hear day after day until they lose at trial.

Re Peepers: seeing the obnoxious comments about having unknowingly been served Halal meat etc I'm getting a clearer picture of why he's bye bye (no one would be complaining about having accidentally eaten kosher meat, would they?) Oh, and btw, Popeye's is halal too, and I love them (at least compared to KFC, and I couldn't care less which religious standard they're meeting).
I am a secular atheist and I enjoy eating Popeye's chicken.

Bottled water is halal. Do Islamophobes complain about drinking water? If so, then Islamophobes would be limited to a diet of pork and alcohol.

If I recall correctly, paranoia is a side effect of crack use. I might just be mixing Peep Show up with reality though. I have to wonder if Ford was just being difficult for the sake of being difficult. What could possibly be recorded during the delivery of libel documents that would be damaging? Did they frisk her too?

All this from a public figure "dedicated" to transparency.

How did the lawyer seem to feel about the ridiculous security precautions?[/QUOTE

Yay for the Peep Show reference. The first thing I thought when I saw Fabio Basso was that he reminded me of Superhans. I bet his crack is rather "more-ish" too.

@k10ery - I do think Peepers intended to defend the principle of free speech more than defending GAE personally (the old saying ""I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it"). However, it seems his arguments sometimes strayed from lofty principles into some pretty biased territory.

As SFO and the moderators have pointed out, these forums are privately owned and have their own set of rules, and creating an account and posting constitutes the user's acceptance of those rules. And the moderator indicated that the ban was carefully considered, so thanks to the mods for the explanations.

I will agree with Cowboy that I was quite surprised that people here were posting that they hoped Ford would take care of himself by OD'ing and stuff like that. I am a member of several other forums where wishing death or injury to anyone -- even in a roundabout or obviously jokey way -- is absolutely forbidden.

halal chicken v. halal beef (or kosher) are two very different things. [upcoming gross oversimplification for the non religious] Beef benefits greatly from aging. More the better up to a crazy wasteful 28 days. Chicken, not so much, halal or kosher is the way to go. Try it. no really.

He wasn't defending free speech. He was defending the actions of a twitter troll so aggressive and repellent that he was arrested for harassment.

"Free speech" doesn't mean - for example - that insecure delusional none-too-bright misogynists get a permanent pass to stalk and terrorize women online to their heart's content.

This whole discussion has turned into a gigantic Milgram experiment. To the several folks who appear to have signed up especially to say Peepers should be banned: Thanks for your contribution!

The issue of speech rights in the internet age is a pretty interesting one though. I think Kat's view is a reasonable and balanced one. But I don't agree. Again, I am not saying that censoring Peepers is illegal in Canada. I'm just saying it's wrong.

And I'll even say it was not in accordance with the rules of this forum. He was not banned for the way he expressed his views. He was banned for his views themselves.

You joined in November. Unless you have gone back through my posting history, you do not know what I am referring to. I'm not bringing up anything about Layton - I'm bringing up a prior discussion which happened here on Urban Toronto.

There is a search and indexing to use... however, I have been around long enough to see your obsession with massage, and Layton, to see your direction.

The "discussion" showed your failings to carry on a rational conversation at that time, and or showing the same this time with your allusions.

Somebody here embedded that Super Hans link here several months ago, it's gold. Matt King is awesome. Though so are Webb, and Mitchell. I really enjoyed Mitchell's soap box.

The animals certainly don't benefit!

Would Dale not have a libel case even without the pedophile insinuation? Ford has consistently lied and misrepresented the facts about the events and accused Dale of stalking, trespassing, invasion of privacy amongst other things. Are those not libelous claims in and of themselves?

....

I think a key element of defamation is that your character or reputation is seriously damaged. I don't think that comes from simple lies about facts. otherwise we'd all be suing each other all the time and it would get pretty frivolous. It doesn't really matter if he stood on cinder blocks or not in the grand scheme of things.

Re: The Ford Escort story
Perhaps the Toronto Star is holding it for a number of reasons?
Seeing escorts is not illegal, but it would certainly would be hard to get one of the ladies on the record. Any person who did go on the record would be sabotaging her career.....and perhaps endangering her life.
Certainly no one would admit to supplying Ford with illicit substances, unless it was part of a deal with the cops after having been caught.
