The record companies made more than there fair share over the years with Sam.

Whether it was "fair" and as to whom made more money was/is not the point;
it was what happened just pre to the bankruptcy, if I remember correctly.
Arnold had come and gone from CBS, MCA had lost Scott Richards, many managers at
other companies had left, all replaced (with the exception of Arnold) with others who were
(to be) held to account. Past profit has little to do with present losses unless your name
is "The Duce", aka Henry Ford II, as in the $ 250,000,000 loss with the Edsel auto. (1950's dollars!)
As an aside, for some laughter:
Lee and "The Duce" are in a heated argument. Lee, for whatever reason, asks his combatant "WHY?"
Henry looks at Iaccocca and says, "You ask me WHY? Because MY NAME IS ON THE F*****G BUILDING!"
