Brown is wise to drag the Conservatives back to the centre (centre-left relative to where they've been the past couple of decades).

I'm not sure what the Liberals can do to compete with what seems like a reasonable platform.

Its worth noting how appealing the PC platform is to an undecided moderate centrist.

At least, I know many people who are going to be really pleased with Hydro cuts, increased daycare and lowering the lowest brackets for marginal taxes.

Its the most Red Tory platform since Bill Davis.

Interestingly, the document shies away from social justice and social policy in general.

There's a lot of talk about families and economic issues - it really does seem like the perfect centrist platform for them.

I consider myself an independent centrist and this does have some appeal.

That platform has no appeal whatsoever because it is deceitful. I want to know where they will get the money for all this, and especially their proposed tax cut, which would provide savings of $1500 for a person with a taxable income of $75,000. There will be massive cuts in other areas. The real "change" is to keep quiet about this, unlike Hudak during the last election, hoping people will be impressed with their faux left platform. It seems to be working so far.

This is my concern as well. All the "gives" look great, but they need to go into detail on what they're going to take away to pay for it all. Any cuts to healthcare or education are completely unacceptable, and if they make cuts to any other areas they'll have to be major.

According to the 2017 Ontario Budget, health, education (including advanced education), and social services represent 70% of total expenses. I don't see how cuts in those areas can be avoided.

Agreed. That's why I singled them out. I'm actually surprised it's only 70%. I'd assumed it was even higher than that.

I'm no fan of Patrick Brown, nor recent incarnations of the provincial party; but I think using the word deceit , relative to what other parties have put out in the past is a word too strong.

There are certainly some details where the words are carefully chosen (for instance a commitment to finish the EA for the GTA West Corridor, but no funding commitment for construction.); and others
where certain items that are omitted may be of interest (including itemized savings).

But its hardly uncommon for every party to assume there is some 'low-hanging fruit', programs with little or no constituency, assumed increases for certain programs that may be avoidable, or even some genuine productivity gain.

I find parts of this platform to be very problematic (including the middle-income tax cut and further small-business rate tax reductions)
amongst other things.

But deceit, I'm not there.....yet.

****

ps. they do have a cost assumption equal to 2% 'efficiency' as I recall.

Which on a budget of about $130B would roughly equal their proposed spend. (again if memory serves)

It would be closer to 78% of program spending after removing the interest on the debt from total expenses.

I don’t think the PC promise list adds up either, but I don’t see how it adds up worse than the > $200 billion shortfall under the sitting Liberal government.
