Since construction started in 2022, Bauhaus Condos has been gradually ascending into the skies Toronto’s Old Town area, now stands over halfway to its final 32-storey height. Designed by architects—Alliance for Lamb Development Corp, the mixed-use development rises just east of the intersection of Ontario and and King streets. UrbanToronto last provided an update on the site in August, 2022, when a shoring rig was working on the early stages of excavation. A crane was installed in July 2023, and much has happened since.
Highlighting some moments captured by UrbanToronto Forum contributors, we'll start with this view from above in October, 2023 when a fresh concrete pour can be seen for a level of the four-level underground garage. The excavation shows partially completed concrete walls and formwork, advancing towards grade level. Three sets of rakers are visible, securing the shoring walls and lagging system in each corner, except for the southeast corner, where materials are staged at grade. Additional materials, including formwork, are laid out closer to King Street East and sub-grade along the southern perimeter.
Bauhaus reached grade around the start of this year. In this street-level view looking northeast in April, 2024, the first floor is fully formed, and concrete work is underway for the second level. Along King Street East, hoarding and scaffolding are set up, with a construction worker pausing traffic whenever an excavator needs some road space. Overhead, the tower crane's jib is in motion, lifting a concrete bucket towards the east side, where formwork and decking for the mezzanine roof are visible.
In this August, 2024 view from King Street East, the eight-storey podium establishes the streetwall along the south elevation. Glazing installation, which began in July, 2024, is visible across most of the mezzanine level, with dark pre-finished aluminum framing. The podium’s upper levels feature red shoring posts supporting formwork for subsequent floors, with the east elevation starting to reveal a projecting volume at the second level, part of the transition to the tower element.
This month, there is significant facade progress, with the window wall system now fully installed from the second to the eighth floors on the south side, while the ground level and mezzanine will feature a curtainwall system and pre-finished metal lattice screening. In contrast, the east elevation features a window wall with thicker framing and narrower panes, currently rising to the 10th floor.
This wider perspective from Berkeley Street showcases Bauhaus Condos emerging amongst its Old Town surroundings, with the step-back above the eighth floor marking the transition from the podium to the tower. Now reaching 22 storeys, we see the north end of the 23rd level has been formed, with formwork advancing on the south side. The construction hoist is positioned along the east elevation on the right.
Upon completion, Bauhaus Condos will rise to 110.9m and house 216 residential units.
UrbanToronto will continue to follow progress on this development, but in the meantime, you can learn more about it from our Database file, linked below. If you'd like, you can join in on the conversation in the associated Project Forum thread or leave a comment in the space provided on this page.
