Woodbine Centre

I just keep thinking about the former Rexdale Plaza in it's final years before becoming a strip mall.

All of Rexdale's major anchors (Zellers, Towers, Shoppers Drug Mart, Hudson's Bay.) had all left and were replaced by no-name dollar stores (along with an actual Dollarama). Before Rexdale Plaza's original structure was demolished in the mid 2000's (the mall had already been in a decline for decades), the mall was empty with plenty of vacant lots, closing down sales and tables set up on weekends in the hallway in flea market fashion. It was very depressing.

The original Rexdale Plaza was a relic from the area's earliest years. A relic, unfortunately, that outlived it's purpose when other local malls such as Shopper's World Albion and the Woodbine Centre were constructed in the decades to follow.

For better or worse, Walmart (and the other anchors) who stepped in and divided the Rexdale Plaza brought back interest into the area.
Which makes me consider the rumour of a Costco (or another big name store) stepping in on Woodbine's soil. On the other side of Highway 27, there's a lot of development going on with the LCBO just opening, Planet Fitness, and even a Domino's Pizza.

"Big Box Hell" could very well be the future for Woodbine's land.

Once the mall closes;
I kind of want mid-rise residential to be built on the woodbine site. I don't think retail will ever return to woodbine due to the 'casino woodbine development', which will include its own retail area. I feel most big box stores will most likely open up at the new plaza proposed on Rexdale and Islington. These two retail projects in Rexdale are backed by companies with deep pockets, once these retail centres are built, woodbine centre will no longer be needed by anyone.

A Costco is planned for the old Sears warehouse at Rexdale and Islington. There's another Costco at Highway 427 and Highway 7. I'd agree that Woodbine Mall would be better off being redeveloped into midrise residential, with about a third of the retail space left for community shopping needs, with room reserved for an extension of the Finch LRT through the property.

As it stands, Woodbine is really caught in a no-man's land. It's in an awkward location, very far from the action (downtown), and difficult to access with public transit. The Finch LRT, with its direct connection to a subway line will help a lot, but it doesn't come close enough to the mall.

There's a reason why Rexdale has been barely touched by the unprecedented development boom of the past 15 years.

with the finch west lrt I feel that most of the development will occur around in emery village (8 condos are proposed so far) and the mount olive area (1 condo and 2 apartments buildings have been proposed so far). both areas are too far from woodbine centre to make an impact in my opinion.

jokingly maybe the Albion mall will see a better future. (it's usually busier than woodbine and has a low vacancy rate + an A&W IS OPENING SOON at Albion)

The Food Court Is The Only (Good Looking) Part Of The Mall, But Needs White Paint To Paint All The Drywall And Drywall Ceiling, And Renovate The Washrooms And Renovate KFC.

The foodcourt sucks. There's no discernible pattern to the floor tiles, the finishes are half-assed, and there are 4 or 5 different styles of chairs and tables for no reason.

After about 13 years, I brought my Mom to visit the Woodbine Centre on Monday. She was shocked to see how "run down" the mall had become since moving to Scarborough and commented on how dead the place was.

We were drawn to the mall again for the sale on cases of Barq's root beer, Canada Dry, and Coke Zero at Shop A Lot. The bottles were smaller than your regular 500ml variety and came bundled in a tray of 20. All for $10 (which is actually $5 since everything is 50% off).

Feeling the offer was too good to be true, I took a closer inspection on some of the bottle's best before dates and found out they were all expired from last August. Yet, the soda was selling quickly as all of the regular Coca-Cola cases had sold out by the time we had returned.

Other Shop A Lot items we noticed:

- Turbotax Software from 2013

- Oxyclean 680g bottles for $2.50 each (about $10 reg.)

- Well-endowed Aboriginal Chief statues

- Aboriginal Chief statues with confederate flags

- More N'Sync puzzles from 2001

- Mambo No. 5. singing dolls from 1999 with yellow stains

- Plush animals where the prices fluctuate based on which cashier you ask

- America's funniest home videos (DVD) knockoffs

- Nascar music CD (2005) Nascar: Fast lane "Today's biggest racing stars and the music that drives them..."

- High School Musical Mini Lockers from around 2005

- Plenty of Justin Bieber binders and biographies

- "Special edition" Turd statues of "Jack Sh*t" (the turd that likes to golf) - many of which contain broken pieces

Better hurry on the expired soda bundles. They are selling like expired hotcakes!

As hilarious as that list is, I find stores like this incredibly depressing.
