TTC: Other Items (catch all)

Not sure what TTC is planning on doing with the PCC's starting in 2020, but they can do what El Paso TX did to their 1937 PCC's. They were rebuilt from the ground up to today standards as well meeting OADA requirements with a lift at the rear door.
since they only have two and they aren't used for revenue service I doubt they would ever even think of putting in a lift into them. There was a mention somewhere that they have or have plans to purchase pantographs for them so they can be used for charter service and in parades etc.

Heads up for those travelling through Union.

TTC access to be redirected via the York Concourse into the western end of the moat. The work is being done to complete the glass roof over the moat and allow for further enhancements in the section currently used to access the TTC.

As we can see now, pole cars can operate on 'panto ready' routes - the PCCs ran on Queens Quay last summer. Pantos cannot operate on non-panto-ready routes. Why would they need to convert the 2 PCCs or the Witt to pantos?

Pole cars can't operate on St Clair plus eventually, they are going to change out the overhead for the switches, once they do that trolly poles won't be able to be used. Also, the PCC's haven't been on Queens Quy since 509 was made pantograph only.

Noticed that they have (finally) removed the 'bracing' and associated barriers in the passageway near the Danish Pastry Shop and appear to have done more repairs to the ceilings. Pity they did not finish painting this ceiling before the new routes at Union open next week.

We made a new video on Islington station: Old and nostalgic with little quirks like the old bus terminal and the train signal exposed on the platform. Love seeing the history behind it but it would be nicer if it was upgraded!

Blue Construction Tarp (2008) - Art installation awaiting heritage designation!

I haven't been out there for years. What a decrepit mess.

Was there a design competition held for these stylin' waste receptacles or did we just get lucky?

I feel as if they simply appeared one day some time ago and I've been quietly admiring their beauty
ever since.

We were on a few Flexity on 509 and 504 yesterday and free rides were to be had. 2 cars had both fare machines out of service and 2 with only one working. Par for the course to see fare machines out of service on my trips.

Saw a few Flexity doing short turn by Bathurst St for 504 and the first time seeing this.

The King and Shaw intersection overhead is finally converted for pans. Is King finally converted to pans now up to Dufferin??? If so, when will we see 504A, 509, 510, 512 having their pans up all the time???

Wait tell late 2020 or early 2021 for Islington upgrading when the bus terminal is torn down after miWay moves to Kipling. They have upgraded the concourse level and tunnel area the past few years. The platform and overhead a mess.

Not sure when TTC will built the new 4 bus bay with elevators for the site. We may know more in 2020 what will happen to the Islington Land as thats is when Tridel lease is up. I expect to see Tridel make a pitch for the land for more condos on it like they did for the north TTC parking lot. Expect the new development will include a new TTC station and bus bay as well underground parking for the current surface lot. One hopes they put in a washroom to replace the one that was taken out of service a decade ago due lack of funds. Will TTC allow this since they want an office towers on the site??

How is the TTC's digital vehicle signage so bad and inconsistent?

The old streetcars and buses single orange ribbon is fine for what it is. The new buses that have a screen the size of a computer monitor is 80% black with an uncentred TTC logo and two meaningless messages. The train interiors use the world's thinnest serif font that makes it tough to read. The new outward-facing ribbons on the subway may be using the world's ugliest font with a mix of small caps and lower case. The only vehicle doing it right with nice thick text is the new streetcars.

Vision also deteriorates with age. See link on how vision changes as you age. Try to have seniors read the instructions on some canned food, especially the ones with tiny black letters on a red background.

They were working on (and seemed to complete) the straight sections east of Yonge a few weeks ago and were on King @ Yonge last week installing the new overhead (which also looks to be finished) According to the TTC notice it all OUGHT to be done now. See: http://ttc.ca/Service_Advisories/Construction/Overhead_upgrades.jsp

Woohoo...pans on King...well one of these days...

Not that I don't love the iconic Toronto look, it's just that de-wiring is so before I cared so much about how-long-it-takes-to-get-anywhere...

Haven't looked at that in sometime. By the looks of things, King is ready or will be shortly to see pans up at all times outside of detours and special events for 504A, 509, 510 and any 512 cars from The Barns or Russell. This also applies to any 511 cars as well when they are place on that line in place of the CLRV's.

Not sure why 512 being upgraded when it was pan ready when the line went back into service around 2010. The current/old overhead on 512 is the same style found in El Paso and Tucson for their pans on streetcars there.

Hi, can anyone tell me where the western end of the Broadview subway platform terminates? Does it extend beyond the senior citizens' home (Danforth Avenue side)?
If you look at the 1964 city air photo, you can see the station box.

The new exit from the east end of the platform comes out about in the middle of the streetcar platforms. If you measure 150 metres or so, parallel to the station, you get something similar to below. The platform extends almost all the way to Danforth, under most of Broadview Manor. But it doesn't extend beyond (to the east). The southeast corner of the platform might be under the grass between Danforth and Broadview Manor.
