TTC: Other Items (catch all)

Noticed this tender call on Merx. This either means that the TTC will continue to use paper transfers for another year or that the 'silos' are not communicating.

"The TTC has an on-going requirement for a company to supply and deliver subway transfer paper, and printed surface transfers which include: Surface Vehicle Transfer, Special Event Transfer, Subway Emergency Transfer and Wheel-Trans Transfer in accordance with detailed requirements as set out in the Terms of Reference. The Company must have a minimum of three (3) years of experience in supplying the similar materials within the past five (5) years.
REQUEST FOR BIDS FOR THE SUPPLY OF SURFACE TRANSFERS AND SUBWAY TRANSFER PAPER FOR UP TO A 1 YEAR TERM BID NO. T03CB19102 "
They will have to completely abolished tickets and tokens and have a solution to cash fare. Either stop accepting cash fare and force riders to buy single tickets in Shoppers Drug Mart or issue presto transfers. Although it could be as simple as giving each driver a stack of paper presto cards and install another reader for them to tap and hand out like transfers, they'll become valuable to theft. They will need a machine to validate them and issue them. With all these Presto issues, I suppose paper transfers will exist for the foreseeable future with attendant accepting them at stations. With the lack of retailers around the city, discounting cash fare isn't possible.

Not sure what TTC is planning on doing with the PCC's starting in 2020, but they can do what El Paso TX did to their 1937 PCC's. They were rebuilt from the ground up to today standards as well meeting OADA requirements with a lift at the rear door.

These cars only run every 30 minutes and the interior is like TTC PCC. Hard to find the time to shoot them due to the 30 minute headway. The 2 of us were the only ones on the car for 80% of the route. Very painful to ride due no traffic priority lights and the lights too long. No shelters on the platforms nor seats.

There is more videos up on site.

A PCC built to today's standards and accessible!? That's crazy. We oughta do the same with some of the C/ALRVs.
Maybe Brockville can do a better way on the old fleet thats haft the age of El Paso PCC's than what TTC try to do years ago. TTC PCC's would have to loose a few seats to meet accessible space

A rare treat this morning with CLRV 4187 in service on King as a 504 this morning. It looked like a training run. Either way, I got a window seat and was reminded of how nice that airflow is from the open window.

Or we could just spend that money on new vehicles with a decent MDBF and which are not "barely accessible".

I see that 4230 is at Roncesvalles this morning after being at Russell yesterday. Transsee does not show it signed in today. Is it possible that As are doing tripper runs without showing up on Nextbus/Transsee? Because otherwise why is 4230 being shuttled here and there?

One of the major issues for doing the current fleet is the body rust. Unlike El Paso who see next to no salt on the road, if at all. The current fleet does and how much of the body has to be cut away to deal with the rust from the salt?

I agree it best to sped money on new cars that are better than we have today for MDBF. I have seen a list of cars out of actions and far too long except for the ones that have been derail or in an accidents.

No idea on the 4200's cars except less than 10 are left and a fair number of the other ones are missing parts at Russell. We will have to wait to see if any hit service this summer as plan.

The body rust has very little bearing on whether a car is capable of going out in service or not. There are quite a few cars that have holes large enough to put a hand or more into, and yet they still see service every day.

What is a very big problem is with the propulsion systems and the air systems on the ageing cars. And on the Cs the wear on the wheels, as changing them is no insignificant task. A number of cars were retired early on solely because they had 4 pairs of bad wheels.

If you don't have a body/shell, what good are the other part even if they are out data?? A new propulsion systems can be had at a cost as well a new truck system and wheels. Is it worth it, than going to a new car??

Sound like TTC stop ordering new wheels long ago and another reason for 2019 retirement if none of the scrap cars had good wheels to pass on to other cars.

Its like having a house with no foundation.

Like I said, the condition of the body has very little bearing on whether a car goes out or not. Cars with holes go out all the time.

When the rebuild program was still a thing, they were fixing up the bodies because it was expected that the cars would need to last a couple more years in service - but that has long since passed.

A new propulsion systems can be had at a cost as well a new truck system and wheels. Is it worth it, than going to a new car??

The TTC obviously didn't think so. Do you think that anyone here would know better than them?

4230 and 4249 are at Roncesvalles for repairs, many legacy cars have been going there for repairs lately.
