The funny thing in the photo above for me is remembering how much it felt like a breakthrough just to have the York Street tunnel gone, and especially to have those pieces of Bremner and Lower Simcoe opened. Of course, after that photo was taken, it then seemed to take forever to get Lower Simcoe connected under the tracks, but now I simply can't imagine Toronto without a place to strand a Ferrari in knee deep water.

Great photo! I'm thinking 1997-ish? So 16 years ago...

AND 4 years from now, Ten York and Harbour Plaza should be (relatively) completed...and perhaps 16 York Street, too.

The images directly above the last post illustrate a feature I continue to appreciate here which is the effect of a smaller, more human-scaled podium along the first floor of the hotel's podium, with vertical slashes creating a sense of rhythm along the sidewalk. It breaks the podium down into a more human scale that I think will serve the sidewalk quite well for a tower of this scale.

I don't think every building can, or should be, 70 storeys tall. Delta is fine and works well amongst its neighbours.

Where did Ryan_T suggest that "every building" should be 70 storeys tall? And why do people misinterpret what other people write/say? I assume he meant that this building is a nice building and it would be good if it stood out a bit more. I also think it would look better if it was taller and stood out more in the skyline. What's wrong with having the most beautiful or interesting buildings stand out from all the other crap? Shouldn't the tallest buildings, that can't be avoided, also be the true landmarks and the most pleasing to the eye? I would think it's pretty obvious. If we demanded better architecture from tall building developers, maybe people would stop calling Toronto ugly or banal.

And of course, nobody is saying that ALL beautiful buildings must be supertalls, only the ones where it's suitable. (like this one)
