Rob Ford's Toronto

Who, MM? I'm ok with "imminent" being anywhere from this afternoon to two weeks from now (meaning I didn't take "imminent" as "tonight or tomorrow" like a lot of people did), but if it doesn't play out sooner than later you have to assume that he loses any credibility he had...rightly or wrongly.

yea, really.

Imminent synonyms:

impending, close at hand, near, fast approaching, coming, forthcoming, on the way, in the offing, in the pipeline, on the horizon, in the air, in the cards, just around the corner, coming down the pike, expected, anticipated, brewing, looming.

Hey, give MM a break, he's not perfect. Are you perfect? :)

LOL, far from it, but I've never smoked crack, driven drunk, or had a domestic disturbance call at my address. I think he genuinely believes what he reveals. I just hope that there isn't someone in the background of all this feeding him false information and trying to make him look foolish. I want to believe! ;)

Regarding the LCBO discussion, that brings back memories of going there as a kid with my dad, in the 70s. What a stark, dismal place that was. It felt like you were going there to purchase some sort of contraband, and that you were being judged. And then they put it into a plain, brown paper bag, because buying liquor was shameful! Not even sure when the transition from that to being a normal retailer occurred, but I know the changeover had been made by the time I was drinking age.

As a new immigrant to Toronto from Europe in the late 70s, I found the LCBO staff intimidating and bullying. The Summerhill LCBO was like a warehouse where you timidly presented your slip of paper with the incomprehensible numbers to an Adam 12-type who glared at you from behind a serving counter - they were big beefy men with no interest in customer service and the occasional ability to be incredibly rude. But Toronto was still in high Presbyterian mode in those days - no drinking on Sundays unless you were travelling and no outside patios.

Now, returning you to the Robbie channel.

Until 1962, individuals needed to have a liquor permit. See link.

When everyone has been sitting around for a year waiting for Ford to be arrested, 'imminent' doesn't mean sometime in the next month. It means police are gathering their forces now. Especially when it's posted out of the blue late at night. You're running a pool here where sometime in the next month is the common choice - it's not really news to say charges will be happening in that time frame. And to say that justice is being delayed now by politics is meaningless. The story has always been shaped by politics. He's used his position and public profile for cover all along. But I was bothered more by the heinous statement. It was sensationalist nonsense. This forum has already had its round of creepy conjecture about 14-year-old Somali girls giving Ford handjobs, all founded on Metroman's suggestions to the nature of a second video. Look at the statement: "plus one charge so heinous I'm going to refrain from suggesting until I get solid intel". So passive aggressive. He's suggesting something horrible right in the statement where he's claiming to refrain from suggesting it. And people will run with it, speculating wildly.

I won't be surprised by anything Ford or his entourage will eventually be proven to have done. There is promise that the shit show of their coverup, once revealed, will be both shocking in its depth and comical in its stupidity. So anything could pan out, but in my observation MM moves the goalposts on his predictions around a lot, and oversells the authority behind his speculation. Your assessment may vary.

Wow. That is fascinating. And creepy and paternalistic. Thanks for posting!

Not so fast, bub. I'll need to check your UT posting license as well as your record of employment, address, and bank account statements for the past 10 years. Wouldn't want heathens and commies to run wild here, would ya, boy?

Never knew it by the"interdiction list" always by the more racist "Indian list" of which my name was a part of at Stores # 13 and 163...(at least that is what attendants told me "your name is on the list" when they refused to serve)

I've never seen one of those, but I do remember the separate entrances for women in taverns. As as kid I was astounded that women could cause mayhem with drunken men, so they had to be kept away in another part of the building. Good old blue laws. Once again, I can't believe the stuff I've learned in this forum. Amazing. Not as good as Purple Jesus, but just as interesting.;)

I remember accompanying my 80 year old grandmother (my grandfather was a teetotaler and refused to go) to the "Strand" in Hamilton...the entrance was "Ladies and Escorts" she used to get egged on by those in attendance for having a five year old escort......

If I recall correctly, "Ladies and Escorts" rooms were common in Toronto into the late 1970's or early 1980s.

That would have been before Rob Ford's time.

That is quite the site. Who knew? It's apparently from a book, probably academic. At any rate it seems like the 'Control' was once may more important than the 'Liquor' to the 'Board'. What would they do with Rob Ford, one wonders?

Yes, it comes from: Punched drunk : alcohol, surveillance, and the LCBO, 1927-75 by Scott Thompson; Gary Genosko Published in Halifax by Fernwood Pub., ©2009.
