Rob Ford's Toronto

I almost feel sorry for Ford. I always felt he just wanted to coach football. The rest he was railroaded into.

I've noticed this too. And of all his scandals, it happened during the robocalling (crazy, right?). Once the robocalling story broke people stopped defending him, even on conservative sites like the Sun.

I'm not as optimistic as you. Hopefully we'll see some polling soon.

How much stock should we put in those polls anyway? I remember reading about Miller had something like an 80% approval rating late in his term. Don't quote me on that, but isn't it possible that no Toronto mayor has ever actually polled lower than Ford?

This isn't a trivial point. As far as I can tell, his approval rating in the 43 - 47% range is the one reason people give for ignoring the fact that he has absolutely no explanation for his numerous criminal ties and suspicious activities and he literally runs away when questioned about them.

You mean Ford didn't get the private sector, in all of their philanthropic wonder, to pay for the entirety of his subway plan? Say it ain't so

Anybody who bought that private sector bullshit was sold a pack of lies. People need to think for themselves when these politicians say anything. Why would the private sector build subways? What's in it for them? Subways sure ain't money making business. If the private sector was so willing to give money to build subways, why haven't they been lining up all these years we have needed money for transit? People these days are intellectually lazy. This is why Rob Ford can get elected. They believe any bullshit they here and don't go and see if what they are being told is true. The media has a role to play in this. Instead of actually doing research and seeing if half of what these politicians say is true, they will continue to print it instead of actually looking into it and calling them out on it.

Sometimes I start to feel sorry for Rob. I'm sure that Doug and his cronies are the ones pulling the strings. But then I remember that he is a colossal dick who has gleefully pissed on every single democratic norm that this city built up over the years. Then I don't feel sorry for him anymore.

I dont listen to his show. What did he say? It may give us a hint at how close Provost is to giving up. If Ford is sucking up to him, that could be interpreted as a "please don't leave me". If he's distancing himself from his chief of staff in any way, he may have already given up and Provost is on the way out. Either way, there's a storm brewing at the mayors office over David Price. Any staff resignations --specially the Chief of Staff --- will be a canary in the coal mine and once the news comes, get ready to plug your ears for the explosion.

On the show over the Thanksgiving weekend (Oct 13th), Rob referred to Earl Provost as a "wimp". I can't remember the context, but, knowing Ford, it was one of those passive-aggressive comments that supposed to be a joke but isn't because he's incapable of masking his feelings on anything. Doug has made some comments about Provost's suspenders and the fact that he's a Liberal. I think there was also some comment about him being cheap, or stealing coffee money, or something like that. I wish I could remember better, perhaps some of the more aware members of this forum can help fill in the blanks.

I don't have solid data on this, but I think it's more than reasonable to say Ford is the least popular mayor in Toronto's (post and pre amalgamation) history. The man had the second lowest approval rating in the country not that long ago. I'm sure it will dip to those down to those levels again in the coming year.

I seem to recall it was when they were talking about Ainslie. Ainslie said he had felt bullied by Ford's staff, Rob said everyone likes Earl, in fact he's a wimp. Rob can't even compliment someone, without saying something nasty to balance it out.

omg, that press conference is INFURIATING. How can he keep on thinking him saying "I've already answered those questions" when he knows he hasn't is going to cut the mustard? He's such a low life coward, spoiled entitled brat.

No your not being too cynical. I had the same thought as well.

I too thought exactly the same thing. Perfect setup to make the reporters look like a pack of wolves attacking good guy Rob Ford meeting a guy with Down Syndrome

Step 1 call press conference
Step 2 tell guy with Down's "I love you" x2. (Make really sure he gets an escort to the elevator!)
Step 3 yell "already answered that, it's over. I'm done. See ya"
Step 4 profit

Man, and I thought Lastman was an embarrassing joke. Well, he was, but.......Ford is so level 10 that I'd beg Lastman to take over at this point.

Wait....what's with us idiots electing these jokers? Says as much about the populace as it does about the jokers, methinks. (Would explain Canada's perpetual shortage in productivity: the people can't get their heads out of their arses long enough to get anything done).

I can't see where anyone railroaded him into anything. He's Mayor because he thinks he's right about everything and wants to be the boss. And he's failing so royally at it because he's an obnoxious fool who is too lazy and undisciplined to be in such a position of responsibility. No reason to be sorry for him. He'll cost the city plenty.

And he shouldn't be a football coach either. He's been dismissed by two school boards, despite bringing free money to their programs. His regard for his players is often horrid, portraying them as gangbangers who would be behind bars if it wasn't from him. He's deeply out of touch with his football obsession, bringing a southern US Friday Night Lights approach, investing money and recruiting players in his need to win, here in a part of North America where people care little about football, especially high school football. And, contrary to the Ford claim that he's kept his fatherless players honest and law-abiding, given his friendships there's the possibility that he brought his high school students into contact with petty criminals and drug dealers.
