Rob Ford's Toronto

Robie to speak at 4. Can't wait to hear the lies and fabrications.

Since Ford is eternally in campaign mode, the next battle will be fought to keep any tax hikes low, low enough to not be able to build anything.

The good thing is that math is on our side since Ford needs to deliver on his subway, and Wynne can use the "Why should Ontario pay for this line" deflection.

$550 Million? How are you getting this figure? Total costs are far from set. I have read upwards of ~4 Billon for the project, all in, so you would be looking at ~1 billion.
That's what the papers are reporting:

It's gonna cost $1.1 billion more, and half needs to come from the feds, so $0.55 billion. I'm sure it will end up costing more, but nonetheless, those are the numbers being thrown around.

P.S. Specifically for the SRT: No, I really don't see the point either, but hey. I would have preferred some of the other parts of the LRT system to be underground though.

Oh yes - that I can certainly agree with. I've never seen so many drivers run a red so carelessly as I do at Eglinton and McCowan. It is scary. In fact, that might be a nice side-effect of the LRT - slow down traffic so bad drivers are made at least slightly less potentially-lethal!

I do not understand, does

Careless drivers + median LRT = good drivers OR
Careless drivers + median LRT = collisions with, and blocking of, LRT.

In this case, I don't think it was a lie. I think he's just completely ignorant about anything related to transit in this city, while remaining confident that he knows everything.
If he's not a liar, then he's a complete moron.

Council has been discussing the SRT alignment for over 30 years, including recent votes on extension, in-fill stations, etc. Rob Ford has participated in many of these discussions in his 13 years on council. To seriously suggest he isn't aware that the SRT is grade-separated implies an extremely low intelligence. I'd go as far as to suggest that if he isn't lying, then he is clearly illiterate - perhaps being so fundamentally delayed that he doesn't actually understand the meaning of simple words like grade-separated.

Upthread when someone indicated Ford said he only takes transit a few times a year - that I'm sure is a lie. Has anyone seen him on transit... ever?
There's been numerous Ford sightings on Transit. Often when inebriated, and occasionally with staff in tow.

I said that even though I fully support gay marriage, I don't think not supporting gay marriage necessairly makes someone a homophobe or bigot, especially years back, when the tide hadn't changed on the issue yet.
Years back perhaps.

But today? It's extremely bigoted to suggest that there's anything wrong with same-sex marriage. Rob Ford has more than done this. He is clearly a bigot. I fail to see why you defend such evil bigotry.

Meanwhile, in Gotham (aka New York City), Bloomberg wants people to use the stairs more. Has anyone seen Ford use the stairs to enter Toronto's council chamber, or does he seem to always use the elevator?

From this link:

Bloomberg's latest anti-obesity effort encourages New Yorkers to take the stairs

NEW YORK—Mayor Michael Bloomberg has gone after supersized sodas and transfats in his quest to curb obesity in New York. Now, in his final months in office, he’s targeting elevators.

On Wednesday, Bloomberg unveiled a new initiative that would encourage office workers to take the stairs instead of the elevator and promote the idea of “active design†in new and renovated buildings in the city, including open stairwells and floor plans that would force people to walk more during the day.

“Exercise is good for you,†Bloomberg declared at a press conference announcing the new design initiative.

The plan includes the creation of the Center for Active Design, a nonprofit group partly funded by the city that would suggest design changes in New York buildings and around the world to promote more physical activity.

For existing buildings, the mayor said he would also introduce legislation that would relax city codes that usually require doors leading to stairwells to be closed or locked in case of a fire. Officials suggested building owners could install a magnet that would hold a door open but automatically close it during an emergency.

City officials want occupants to be able to use the stairs instead of an elevator if they choose—though Bloomberg, who pointedly noted that he takes the stairs when he can, insisted he wasn’t trying to force exercise on people.

“What we’ve got to do is just make it cool–if you will–or socially more the norm to exercise, and that’s what you see here,†Bloomberg said. “The whole idea is not to change what you have to do, but to give you the idea and the impetus to do something that is in your best interest.â€

Bloomberg’s far-reaching health proposals have prompted critics to accuse him of being a “nanny†mayor—a term that he has frequently mocked.

But perhaps anticipating criticism over his latest proposal, he brought up the “nanny†critique at Wednesday’s press conference, insisting his proposals have been popular and are why the city is growing.

“Somebody asked me the other day, ‘Well isn’t all this nannygate stuff hurting business?’ And I pointed out we have a record number of companies moving here, we have a record number of private sector jobs here, we had record number of tourists coming here, we have a record number of people here. Stop me when you get bored,†Bloomberg said.

“I mean,†he added, “these are things that most people like.â€

Officials were careful to note that many of the design proposals are just suggestions, not mandates. But Bloomberg argued that the designs not only would help New Yorkers be more active, but also would be more welcoming aesthetically. He said the city would not offer economic initiatives to building owners looking to comply with the sugestions.

“The economic initiative is you live longer,†Bloomberg declared.

Maybe it's just me then having a problem believing that someone, even a politician, could be so maladjusted and amoral/immoral to lie so blatantly. I've chalked up everything he's done so far to idiocy or ignorance, but if its with intent to deceive then it almost verges on evil.

It was still bigotry years ago. It was just wasn't recognized as such back then.

It's hard to understand him either being that unethical or that unintelligent. I can't think of another option, unless he's not sober today. But from everything I've seen, he's been sober for a few weeks now ... and much more effective because of that.

I just got home and heard the news. I'm stunned. If this does pass the funding test this project may hand him the next election.

In answer to an earlier question, it does appear to pull funding from the Sheppard LRT (that $333 million figure that kept getting batted around until one of the Councillors put 1+1 together mid-day yesterday, about 20 minutes before the YouTube clip a couple of pages back). To see how this unfolded, click on this link and start at 383:12 (you'll see the timer in the lower left of the video window) when Rob Ford tables his Motion. It's a really good watch - http://www.rogerstv.com/page.aspx?lid=237&rid=16&sid=1030&gid=116238
