And now our migrant workers, who do work we can't be bothered doing, are getting sick.
Three points.
1) We allow housing for these workers which is not remotely socially distant; sometimes 6 or more to a room.
That wasn't ok before Covid; its downright irresponsible during Covid.
2) Every single person allowed in to do this work ought to have been tested before leaving their home country, and again on arrival here. I hope that was done; I fear it was not.
3) I have every sympathy for these workers; but let me say, I think many Canadians would do this work, IF we applied the Employment Standards Act in full to agricultural workers...........
(They are largely exempt from minimum wage, from overtime, from all sorts of provisions)
AND, of course, the pay was better.

We need to acknowledge these workers are being exploited in normal times; that exploitation lowers the cost of our produce, both domestically and for trade purposes.
We ought not to do that; but we have to have the discussion about a fair price for food; and also how our trade agreements allow in produce from other countries, notably the United States
who do business in the very same way.
This means unless they also raised employment standards in agriculture, we would have to deliver new subsides to farms for our products to remain competitive.
I would happily support raising standards for agricultural workers and footing the bill either way; regardless of who ends up doing the work.
