Next Mayor of Toronto?

I agree that it is likely public transit. I'd just like to see Ford taken out of the equation in these polls :). Well, to be frank, I'd like to see him taken out of the equation,period.

CityTV did a similar survey last summer. By a huge margin, Torontonians prioritized building a better city over low taxes.

Well, he has become a celebrity and has put Toronto in the limelight through international media attention. I can't recall another Toronto Mayor who has been interviewed by the big U.S. networks before and lampooned in U.S. late-night talk shows. As someone once said, no publicity is bad publicity. He has the name recognition, that's for sure; for good or for bad.

What Council has done these last few days will likely backfire and turn into a David and Goliath story, an us vs. them. If Rob cleans up his act then he could totally turn this around by next fall to be a success story and appeal to the majority of lower income, working class who don't relate to Toronto's elite.

Olivia Chow has good strategists but still represent's Toronto's elite...even if she does run on a centre-left campaign no one can forget about her and Jack living in social housing lol. Tax and spend...you better believe it!

Time will tell. A week in politics is a long time. But the election really is Rob's to lose. He just needs to clean up his personal life!!

Just as a matter of interest as someone who isn't from Canada (and picking up a point that Doug Ford made yesterday) - is a 10 month campaign for council elections common in Canada?

This is exactly what I fear.

Olivia Chow has good strategists but still represent's Toronto's elite...even if she does run on a centre-left campaign no one can forget about her and Jack living in social housing lol. Tax and spend...you better believe it!

Time will tell. A week in politics is a long time. But the election really is Rob's to lose. He just needs to clean up his personal life!!

I think you're overstating how easy it will be for Ford to win. Even before the scandals hit Chow consistently polled higher than Ford. Now only 38% of people say that they'll consider voting for Ford. I'm not saying that Ford can't win, but he's going to have an uphill battle.

Here's an analysis of the 2010 election from U of T professor Zack Taylor and his comments on how the center-left can recapture the mayor's office. Interestingly, he refutes a lot of the cottage industry about Ford Nation being mostly poor visible minorities etc. Income had little to do with support for any candidate and areas with a higher percentage of visible minorities were actually more inclined to vote for Smitherman.

Does Olivia Chow now represent Chinese views? Wow, that's arrogant. I know many Chinese conservatives who support RF. There is a reason why they left red China after all. (Listen up Justin Trudeau!)

She really should keep her mouth shut. Are people just supposed to forget about Jack's incident in a rub-and-tug? Now that's embarrassing. I guess people did forget because it didn't seem to affect his career. At all.

I completely agree with you ! I indicated as such in the Mayor Ford thread but his 'core' group of clearly irrational votes will be unswayed regardless of what new information comes out. One would imagine / hope that % of the population that fall into this group is low but I wouldn't be surprised if it is in the 10-20%.

Moreover the general public always loves an us vs them story, where 'them' will be labeled as a group of left wing / tax and spend evil doers. Also I know a group of, albeit small, component folks who find this all very entertaining and would love to see Ford stay in office merely for this fact; They know he has (and will have) very little actual power.


It'll be very interesting to see what time will do to this story, the general public / media will not be kept entertained by Ford for a whole year, so things will inevitably die out ! I actually perdict this will happen sooner then later. Maybe inflating for a month again when and if the video comes out. So the release of the video will dictate a lot as well.

Settle down.

Who else would you send to represent Toronto in China? She's well-versed in Toronto city affairs and she's fluent in Mandarin and Cantonese. And trying to lure foreign exchange trading to Toronto doesn't strike me as particularly socialist in its agenda.
