Metrolinx: Bombardier Flexity Freedom & Alstom Citadis Spirit LRVs

Meanwhile in Ottawa, the general belief is no joy on the Citadis front, there is a Fedco meeting tomorrow and the city has become very tight lipped, which is the usual sign before yet another delay announcement

This delay will appear quite bad considering the Alstom CEO himself was summoned to Ottawa and gave assurances.

In semi related news, Calgary might end up with either Flexities or Citadis trains. Fortunately for them all the kinks will have been sorted out by then, the first user tax having been paid by KW and Ottawa. Metrolinx should also fare well, despite all the drama around the prototype car.

^Perhaps someone should remind Minister Mulroney that the other product that kept Thunder Bay in business was TTC subway cars. Since Ford has chosen to not buy these for the Ontario line, that opportunity has gone.

Part of me thinks they've thought of this and that the "Ontario Line" cars are supposed to be Millhaven's very own Innovia. Also with SSE being brought back to the drawing board it could be a more immediate purchase of Innovia for Line 3 (instead of going through with SSE). Connect the dots and it sort of makes sense that this is where we're headed. Made in Ontario, just not Thunder Bay. Though the riding is represented by now Independent Randy Hillier so maybe not..

Ontario Line will almost certainly follow the same DBOFM style tender as GO RER has been following. The tender will specify capacity (initial and growth), performance (trip time) characteristics, pollution characteristics, ROW availability (above ground here, below ground there), and little else (must comply with AODA, building code, etc.).

We won't know whether it'll be single or double bore, bored stations or excavated, etc. until 18 months after the vendor is selected and their designs are submitted to Metrolinx for approval.

Bombardier will certainly bid on it but will be a small player in a larger construction consortium.

A Flexity Freedom was spotted on a trailer in Havelock on July 24th, in Metrolinx grey. I learned about this from an e-mail I was bcc'd on, so while I have the photographic evidence I am not at liberty to share it. Speculation in the e-mail thread was that this was the eighth vehicle (not counting the two initial prototypes) to head over to the EMSF.
 
^ Interesting. Would they be dropping it off at the CP Rail yard in Havelock so that it could be taken by train to the EMSF which is on the CP Rail line? Not sure why it would have to go all the way up to Havelock since the CP Belleville Sub is closer in distance to Kingston...cc @crs1026
 
^ I din't read @KevinT to be saying that the tram was on a railway car... more likely the highway trailer was just taking a coffee break?

^ Totally agree @KevinT is saying it's on a truck trailer. I'm just wondering (and I realize this is unlikely) that they are taking it by truck to Havelock and then transferring it to a train flatcar in the Havelock rail yard.
 
^I don't know what it costs for the permits, escorts, and truck/trailer time for a highway move, especially one across Toronto on the 401, but hypothetically CP might have cut them a rate that is cheaper for a straight haul from Havelock to Agincourt than what CN charges to pick up at Millhaven, lift at Ernestown, switch at Belleville, switch again at Mac Yard, and interchange to CP at Lambton. Seems unlikely, but a routing north from Kingston to Highway 7 also seems unlikely when the load could just go down the 401.

Could this have just been the mockup being moved somewhere for display?

I guess my biggest annoyance will be OC Transpo overdid it with the doors.. There's a door opening tone (in the video at 23:17) and it then announces "Doors Opening" in both languages, then a door closing chime then both languages again. They could have skipped the announcement part and just used the chimes, since there's an opening and closing version

The new Alstom Light Rail Vehicle (LRV) mock-up is coming to Mississauga over Labour Day weekend!

Tour the mock-up vehicle at Square One Shopping Centre, Entrance 7, near both the MiWay and GO Bus Terminals from Friday, August 30th to Monday, September 2nd. Transit fans, commuters and back-to-school shoppers in the Peel region will have the opportunity to tour the vehicle for the first time and take photos of themselves with it.

Alstom LRVs will connect the cities of Mississauga and Brampton via the Hurontario LRT line in the near future. Just down the street from the mock-up site, the Hurontario LRT’s City Centre stop will connect future transit riders to the MiWay and GO Bus Terminals, to create even more connections in the Peel region.
