GO Transit: Construction Projects (Metrolinx, various)

As anticipated, there was a work block this weekend to rearrange the trackage at Hamilton Jct. This finally ties in the new GO track between this location and West Harbour. While it is clearly an interim move, it gives a lot more flexibility to GO and CN to run more frequent trains between Aldershot and Hamilton (and beyond). GO now has its own dedicated track from here to West Harbour, and (in connection with activation of crossovers that went in at Bayview) it's possible to have two GO trains pass between Hamilton Jct and Bayview, or between Hamilton Jct and West Harbour. It's also now possible for CN to have a freight occupy one mainline (aka "the Hot Track") without blocking GO trans' path.

Next steps are a) a short bit of ballasting and surfacting and b) the signals crew need to go to work. Note that the signals are either pointed away from the main line, and/or bagged so that they can't give an unintentional indication to trains. The signals testing is quite involved, as every possible combination of indications must be verified. Since there are other interlockings at each end, and the signalling gives advance indications right through these, it means a lot of field work with many permutations and combinations. However, at long last there is something to hook up and test.

Tying in this connection was done at the expense of the south connecting track to CP. In the short term, that's not a big deal. Once GO started storing trains at Hunter St, service is down to one direction at a time on this segment. From the number and placement of the new signals, which are not yet in service, it does appear that the second main will be tied back in eventually.

It's a small and less than substantially complete step, but it's a sign that more service may indeed be coming to West Harbour.

That's exciting. Do you know when CN will tie in the two West Harbour station tracks into the mainline to eliminate the need to back into the station for Niagara GO trains?

The full build-through will take years. The workaround solution - a platform on the existing mainline - is said to be in the works as we speak.

You mention a combined Bramalea-Unionville service offering relief, but while technically possible, considering the current Ontario government cancelled the fare harmonization between GO and TTC, it won't offer much relief. Unless we re-instate some kind of discount for taking GO and TTC together.

How can that - a full build-out - take years if a station is going to open (Confederation GO) beyond West Harbour next year?

Temporary arrangement utilising the existing main line, I suppose. There's precious little sign of work advancing. Look at the Stouffville line - it's progressing well, but it's still a ways off even with all the progress showing.

Good information -- thanks for this info.

Indeed, there are a massive number of complications with the build-through.

Turning the northernmost edge of West Harbour into a platform-side facing the mainline, is certainly the easiest interim solution if push came to shove -- something that can be pulled off before the end of the year.

Hopefully this mean the eventual extension of Aldershot terminus to West Harbour terminus.

As a semi-ghost station finally activates into a much more active service -- some minor maintenance at West Harbour is needed -- e.g. repairs to defective parking sensors. (More than 50% of them are malfunctioning)

Indeed. My point was, on the Confederation extension, the crews are at best “still playing with dirt” as one observer put it. Measure the time from when that was true on the Stouffville line to its projected completion....there is no way they can have new track ready to Stoney Creek by opening day.

If the Confederation station is to open in 2021/22, you will be hard press to see tracks for it. Still have to build the bridge to take the tracks to NF. Look how long it taken to cut the 3rd track in in Hamilton. and they have yet to start work on the 3rd track to Bayview Junction. The current mainline has a nice kink in it passing the new Confederation station location and only noticed it on my last visit.

Stouffville Line is seeing the 2nd track added to the new switch north of Eglinton Ave. Concrete ties being used.
