Church-Wellesley Village

On any trip to Church Street it would certainly seem that they are the only examples of the "community". I'm happy to hear and see that our "community" has now spread out and feels free enough to socialize openly in pretty much any other part of the city.

i think the biggest misconception is that the village represents the gay community and it doesn't...it's just a part of it, a small part of it, but it always gets the attention because it makes the most noise

there are far more gays outside of the village than in it and the number that have never stepped foot in it would blow your mind

it always amazes me the amount of fresh faces i see during pride who either live in toronto or in the gta that only see the corner of church and wellesley one weekend a year

and the number of bars that play gay porn on their tv's are greatly outnumbered but the ones that don't...our village is hardly booming these days but i think it offers a fair variety for everyone, depending on what you're looking for when you go out

Remington's is/was definitely gross. How they manage to find the skankiest bottom-of-the-barrel guys is bewildering. Actually maybe "sad" is a more appropriate word for Remingtons. Visitors to Toronto have always complained about how low-end it is (especially compared to Montreal).
Visitors from Montreal, sure.

The dancers at Remmington's have always seemed pretty varied to me, everything from what you've described to occassionally smokin' hot. It may take waiting for a few songs (ok, maybe 20 songs) though before you see something you like. Also, a few times a month (I think still) dancers from Campus in Montreal dance at Remmy's too if you want some of that.

We all know Montreal has a great gay strip scene, but it's pretty much alone in North America. Most cities have no gay male strip establishment, and if they do, they don't take everything off as they legally can't (i.e., Boston).

And I guess if by "community" you mean bars that prominently play gay porn, and huge honkin' billboards advertising sex websites and places to hook up for anonymous sex then, well, have at it.
Let's face it, sex is one of the key definers of our community and I don't see anything wrong with that. In fact, I fully believe in celebrating it.

No, by community, I mean the whole Gay Village and all the activities that go on there. It's the only place I can go and meet people I know, walking down the street or having coffee on an outdoor patio. I've gone to West Queen West over a dozen times, and never saw a single person I know or met anybody even remotely interesting. For me, nothing can replace the village. I've had many great nights out on Church St. I can't say that about any other neighbourhood in Toronto. (in regards to socializing and having a laugh)

I think Remington's looked like any ordinary bar in Toronto, other than the fact that it had strippers on a stage. It was not even close to Montreal's sleazier bars (The 2 R's, L'Adonis, Taboo) Hell, half the dancers at Remington's were from Montreal. Now where do I take gay tourists who want to see male flesh?

And what's wrong with porn and sex web sites? lol It's not like that's the only options for gay people. They have sleaze for gutter snipes like myself and classier places for decent folk like you. (I'm making assumptions here lol) Why shouldn't we have a bit of everything, so we all can find what we need.

Hmm. I don't think I have the energy for this debate. Maybe I'm just getting less tolerant as I age. I'll leave it there.

Not condescending. I just feel bad for anyone who needs to get off on something seedy like Remingtons. *shudder*

We're all entitled to our opinion. And you've heard mine. This forum isn't just OLD "fags", digi.

That's funny because I'm not known as condescending by anyone who actually knows me. But okay :)

Glad you got a laugh out of it.
Perhaps your firends are just as uptight as you are...peas in a pod!

Spire:

Not to me. Others can, as casaguy said, have at it. But not me. Gross. And most liberated young gay men seem to agree.

Well, you are part of, but not the sole representative of the community. Kind of like how the fact that I don't enjoy drag doesn't make the latter any less an aspect of the community.

As to the assertion of "most liberated young gay men" - well, that's a rather loaded statement to make. Just how they these young gay men particularly "liberated"? That they feel the need to pass judgement on what turns people on and off, and categorize their acceptability accordingly? That's not liberation - that's regression to Victorian social mores. What's next, gay run moral hygiene societies dictating what's fab and what's not fab?

Who are you to judge what is Prudish? And "Victorian"? Hahahaha. Hardly. Not even close. Don't get me to PM you all the non-Victorian things I've done in my life. ;)
