400 foot List

count me in on that group! hahaha, I grew up on Bay street in the shadow of many of our towers from that era. If it wasn't for that, I probably wouldn't have quite the same appreciation for tall towers that I have today. Saw some of them built right before my eyes, Skydome, SotiaPlaza, and BCE place among others. So I definitely agree with that statement, you really do see buildings in a very different way when you've grow up around them.

I think the "worlds tallest" was a badge of pride that we wore as kids, a kind of ...Arrival statement!! It became something our moms told us every time we were in the area,.... the look up kids.... that you never get in most places.... to this degree.
So we're instilled with, height as acknowledgment or recognition of place. Thus we grow up as skyscraper geeks, cause we grew up looking up,... and cranes and rebar excite us and we bristle with pride as our city stretches skyward and into the global arena.

yes in North America, but in terms of the world...no chance...Hong Kong, Shanghai (regardless of their questionable architecture), Panama perhaps, and Im sure I am missing a few aside from New York and Chicago.
On the other hand, *if* the premise is true that there are a lot of skyscraper geeks in Toronto (and I don't think it's necessarily so), I feel it has more to do with there being a big contrast in building heights in Toronto - ie, the majority of buildings are lowrises, contrasted with the "few" (relatively) highrises here and there. For example, why would someone in Hong Kong be fascinated by skyscrapers when he lives in a skyscraper, works in a skyscraper, shops in a highrise, goes to school in a midrise, and barely ever sees a building less than 10 storeys? In fact, since the last decade or so the dominant sentiment towards skyscrapers among Hong Kongers (if they have any, other than as a necessary part of life) tends toward a negative view of "forests of concrete", barriers to the harbour that interrupt the view of the mountains, block air circulation and contribute to air pollution, and are generally more fascinated by, and eager to save, the handful of old low-midrise nighbourhoods that remains.

I believe we should have a thread just for... RUMOURS (Toronto Skyscrapers 40s/400ft.-120m.....100s/1000ft.-300m)
Lately a lot of posts are full of rumours regarding very tall buildings planned for different areas of the city..none of these have actually been announced or submitted into city planning, so really they are just rumours started out by real estate blogs, twitter, forums, BS artists, etc.

These latest developments have all submitted plans to the city (or made public announcements).....so they are not rumours

Since it is hard for me to get to every thread it's nice to find out about these things. i include a few upcoming projects so I will try and add some of these.

Also if anyone posts new project info or changes please post it here so I can update the list. It's too hard for me to catch everything!

That's a great list AG. If all these rumours become fact, Steveve's going to be busy well into his 20's. Love this place !

Skyscrapercity page database for Toronto has updated the top 25 proposed tallest buildings for Toronto...
Interesting that they have added... the not announced 120 Harbour at 75 storeys.

45 Bay Street 47s proposed

• 120 Harbour 75s proposed

• 43 Simcoe 54s proposed

• 90 Harbour Residential II 70s proposed

• 90 Harbour Residential I 70s proposed

• 156 Front 65s proposed

• 460 Yonge 60s proposed

• Bay-Adelaide East 45s proposed

• 88 Scott 58s proposed

• 501 Yonge South 58s proposed

• 501 Yonge North 58s proposed

• 880 Bay Street 44s proposed

• First Parliament Tower 1 57s proposed

• 42 Charles East 57s proposed

• Bloor & Parliament Tower 1 56s proposed

• Cumberland Terrace Re-development I 45s proposed

• Waterways I 50s proposed

• 44 Eglinton West 48s proposed

• Bloor & Parliament Tower 3 53s proposed

• 16 York Office 31s proposed

• 43 Gerrard West 50s proposed

• Lago at the Waterfront 49s proposed

• 15 Mercer Street 49s proposed

• Karma 46s proposed

I assume that the list here has much more strict rules for entries. It's likely SSC is a bit more liberal with what gets added given its a more international site that suffers from a lot of "member"-measuring.

Edited to add:
I just checked ssc and in the 120 Harbour thread itself there's no mention of 75 storeys that I could find. I think perhaps you mean skyscraperpage, which upon checking doesn't even have a Toronto section. They do have a Calgary, Edmonton, Halifax, Hamilton, London, Ottawa, Vancouver, Waterloo, and "VibrantVictoria".

Nice list. I just thought I would order them according to storeys (obviously commercial towers would be taller and the height would vary, but ...) from smallest to largest so I could get a better grasp on the possible proposals:

• 16 York Office 31s proposed

• 880 Bay Street 44s proposed

• Cumberland Terrace Re-development I 45s proposed

• Bay-Adelaide East 45s proposed

• Karma 46s proposed

• 45 Bay Street 47s proposed

• Theatre Park 47s proposed

• 44 Eglinton West 48s proposed

• Lago at the Waterfront 49s proposed

• 15 Mercer Street 49s proposed

• Waterways I 50s proposed

• 43 Gerrard West 50s proposed

• Bloor & Parliament Tower 3 53s proposed

• 43 Simcoe 54s proposed

• Bloor & Parliament Tower 1 56s proposed

• First Parliament Tower 1 57s proposed

• 42 Charles East 57s proposed

• 88 Scott 58s proposed

• 501 Yonge South 58s proposed

• 501 Yonge North 58s proposed

• 460 Yonge 60s proposed

• 156 Front 65s proposed

• 90 Harbour Residential II 70s proposed

• 90 Harbour Residential I 70s proposed

• 120 Harbour 75s proposed

I couldn't see a better place to put this.

Red = proposal
Green = U/C
A bunch of constructed buildings such as Pantages and Spire were missing so I tried to ad those that I noticed. Also I'm sure I missed a bunch of U/C or proposed buildings. This view shows everything within front to Bloor, and Jarvis across to University. Most of the red is just massing.

If you see something missing, please let me know. Also I'm not putting in any speculation proposals.
