Critics peeved over new sidewalk ‘information pillars’

The funniest part about our 'pillars' is that, because of the orientation of the informational portion, anyone trying to actually use the signs is forced to block off even more of the sidewalk. They're obstructive enough on their own, but when you have even a small group of 4-5 people (ie. a...

TTC: Flexity Streetcars Testing & Delivery (Bombardier)

This isn't really the best thread for this...but yes, Sheppard has reached a point where the current bus service is no longer adequate. Same goes for Eglinton, which is why it is also getting its own line; funded and currently prepping for construction.

    1233 Queen East | ?m | 8s

"Glitch" or not, there's no way that system was designed so that the voiced warning about impending closure is supposed to be played after the doors have already closed. That's the 'glitch' I was applauding having been corrected. If it was being caused by operator error, then my applause...

    1233 Queen East | ?m | 8s

So I caught a random TR the other day, and get this....it pulled into the station, let people off and on (boring)...then the chimes sounded...the 'doors are closing' warning played...then the doors closed!!! In that order!!! One door glitch has been solved, it seems.

    Rob Ford's Toronto

Finch commuters to get subway, Ford vows THURSDAY, MARCH 31, 2011 http://www.torontosun.com/news/torontoandgta/2011/03/31/17826436.html Clearly stated, with a firm timeline. I assume someone close to him pointed out how preposterous this was, cuz he hasn't mentioned it in a while.

    Rob Ford's Toronto

I finally got a slow day at work and listened to that ridiculous radio show. Possibly the worst 'discussion' of transit policy I've ever heard. Nearly all of the "facts" (usually followed by "and that's a fact!") we're 100% wrong. The lunatic logic spewing from callers was always met by "I...

    Transit City Plan

Comparing TC to St Clair is silly, and makes you sound silly. It's only used by Kouvalis mouth-pieces so they can associate TC with the problems that came with that line's construction, and the perceived injustices done to automobile traffic on that street. It's meant to drum-up support from...

    Transit City Plan

I'm not defending anyone. Nor am I saying anything is 7 times anything else. I'm saying the numbers you're quoting for surface LRT are not for surface LRT. Y $/km = ($8.2B - [# km's tunneled x $335M]) / (# km's surface) Insert the numbers, solve for Y, that's your rough cost per km of...

    TTC: Sheppard Subway Expansion (Speculative)

There is a crippling bottleneck on Sheppard at the 404, an employment node at Consumers, and a busy bus route at Vic Park. I don't know if that's worth $700M or whatever it is, but I could think of way stupider things to spend money on. Lately I'm preferring the idea of running the SE-LRT to...

    Transit City Plan

The $134M/km cited there is not for surface LRT, it's the average per km cost for the entire plan, which includes a lengthy tunneled stretch on Eglinton. Feel free to do some quick algebra to find out the surface LRT cost...

    TTC surface stop spacing

...not to mention the fact that this is a rough TTC estimate, and has not gone through any bidding whatsoever. I feel like a newspaper comment section somewhere lost a poster.

    Transit City Plan

Are you concerned with LRT's lack of draw, or with its insufficient carrying capacity? It can't be both incapable of attracting riders, AND in danger of attracting too many riders. Please pick one.

Critics peeved over new sidewalk ‘information pillars’

and should you wish to actually stop and examine the information, you need to block even more sidewalk...though thankfully the ad remains unobstructed

    Toronto Crosstown LRT | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx | Arcadis

The cost of a km of elevated is roughly half of the cost of a km of bored tunnel. Even assuming it's only 1/3 less, a city government stressing over the cost of splash pads should certainly appreciate the value of $100M+ per km of wasted cash. There are 8ish km's between Laird and Kennedy, so...

    Toronto Crosstown LRT | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx | Arcadis

You'd think so, but he's the one that's insisting on going underground for that whole stretch. He's a complicated man...

Some news of the most recent HSR study is finally trickling out... High-speed train to Windsor won’t pay, says new study October 14, 2011 Tess Kalinowski High-speed rail on the Quebec City-to-Windsor corridor could raise between $1.2 billion and $1.3 billion a year once it’s fully...

    Monorail for Toronto

No need to get worked up...it's a fictional "plan" anyway. It's more of a conceptual representation of what the Glory of Private Money can provide. Someone assumed that yokels would think 'ooooh, monorails are futuristic and coooool' so it made the "plan". BTW, you've referred to people as...

    TTC: Sheppard Subway Expansion (Speculative)

I think the Mayors would have a hard time finding private investors for a line like that...and as much as he wants to build it, Robbie's been pretty vocal on the evils of using public money for, well, basically anything.

TTC: Flexity Streetcars Testing & Delivery (Bombardier)

Am I the only one that actually likes having parking on the streetcar routes? As a pedestrian, the buffer-zone is very welcome for numerous reasons. And as a streetcar passenger, the parked cars make it harder for drivers to run me over when I'm exiting.
