2018 Ontario Provincial Election Discussion

It’s a very big deal when the provincial auditor calls the government’s financial statements “bogus”. Whatever else the Wynne Liberals may be, they’re not honest.
 
The problem with contemplating the Liberals' richly deserved defeat in the upcoming election is the question of who's going to potentially succeed them, and we all know it ain't going to be the NDP. Which is why cute little developments like the ones outlined by Videodrome just above give me pause for concern.

So. It's not just Ford. The entire provincial PC party appears to be taking a hard turn into nutcase extremism. The crazy anti-sex creep actually won that nomination? Couldn't the PCers in Mississauga have chosen someone who was, oh, I don't know, sane? And some slimebag from Rebel Media was simply appointed without all the fuss and bother of a nomination to begin with? Well, isn't that special? And let us not forget L'il Mikey Harris Junior losing his nomination and being appointed to a post anyway. If this is the way things currently operate in the PC Party it's little wonder Elliott decided to keep quiet & go along to get along after all the shady crap that took place during the contest for glorious leader.

NDP Platform Proposals see some support

Toronto, April 19th - In a random sampling of public opinion taken by The Forum Poll™ among 1126 Ontario voters, half (TOP2: 50%) say they support the NDP proposal to increase taxes on high income earners, with a third (34%) saying they approve strongly. A third (BTM2: 34%) say they disapprove, with one-fifth saying they (20%) disapprove strongly. Just under one-sixth (13%) say they neither approve nor disapprove, while few (3%) say they do not know.

Surcharge on vehicles supported
4 in 10 (TOP2: 43%) say they approve of the 3% surcharge on vehicles that cost over $90,000, with a third (30%) saying they approve strongly. Just over a third (BTM2: 38%) say they disapprove, with more than a quarter (27%) saying they disapprove strongly. One-sixth (16%) say they neither approve nor disapprove, while few (3%) say they do not know.

Opinion divided on child care
4 in 10 (TOP2: 41%) say they support subsidized, $12 per day child care, with a quarter (25%) saying they approve strongly. Just over a third (BTM2: 38%) say they disapprove of the child care, with a quarter (26%) saying they disapprove strongly. One-sixth (17%) say they neither approve nor disapprove, while few (4%) say they do not know.

Converting student loans to grants supported
Almost half (TOP2: 47%) say they approve of converting the provincial portion of student loans into grants that don’t have to be repaid, with almost 4 in 10 (38%) saying they approve strongly. Almost 4 in 10 (BTM2: 38%) say they disapprove of this conversion, with a quarter (24%) saying they disapprove strongly. About 1 in 10 (12%) say they neither approve nor disapprove, while few (3%) say they do not know.

Ford is a weak leader. He lost the popular vote and riding count, has almost no supporters in caucus and doesn’t control the party machinery. He needs to get a bunch of loyalists on board pronto to hold off a potentially hostile caucus.

I hate to be one of those conspiracy theory losers but when you think about it this all seems so staged. How did everything just so coincidentally collapse like this?
 
More Auditor-General/Liberal disputes, over the size of the deficit. Will we be able to trust any costed election plans?

Well, consider that the government isn't including the money being borrowed to pay for hydro bill subsidies as a cost and that they are including pension contributions as revenue.

Yeah......I don't mind making a judgment call given this information.
 
Interesting (and positive) assessments- I like that the NDP is positioning itself as the party of choice for progressive policies as the ABF vote shifts around. Are we going to see a Star endorsement of the NDP?

This is a mess of the Liberals' making but it's a problem now for all the parties. They need to:
1) Adopt Lysyk's accounting model, with major spending cuts that implies;
2) Find a new AG who'll do the books their way; or
3) Live forever with AGs saying the books are cooked.

Everyone will choose #1. This is a simple Liberal excercise in dishonesty. Federally, the equivalent PBO confirmed that the Harper surplus was accurate in 2015. I think all governments were comfortable with the Generally Accepted Accounting Principles until the Liberals came around.

This just gives Ford more reason to promise no guarantee of balance until other Liberal deceptions are investigated.

Well there's a lot of 'stupidity' going around, and fools who fall for it, as Lysek's said the same about the Cons too. This is an accounting dispute that goes far beyond Ontario. It's international. Not that many Cons would know that though.

The days of informed Conservatives have gone. All hail the new Knee-Jerk in Chief!
