To close out our Topping Off series for 2019, we are taking a look at the 10 most popular UrbanToronto Database files, Forum Threads, and News Stories from across the entire year, starting with this countdown.
Over the course of 2019, dozens of new projects were entered into our Database, and countless more active projects were updated with new images. As the year unfolded, these were the files that you looked up the most!
10. The Residences of 488 University Avenue
Now wrapping up construction, this Core Architects-designed project from Amexon Development Corporation has added 37 new levels of condominiums above an existing 18-storey office tower at Univeristy and Dundas, including a modernized entrance to St Patrick subway station.
The large Bathurst and Bloor footprint of this new mixed-use community from Westbank Corp includes the site where Honest Ed's formerly stood. Designed by Henriquez Partners Architects, the project currently under construction will introduce residential rental towers along with new retail and public spaces to the site.
8. The HUB
Oxford Properties Group and Ports Toronto's proposed office tower at 60 Harbour Street has been evolving since first proposed in 2018. Most recently, a December application included revisions to both the tower height and the signature spire feature atop, now planned to rise 57 storeys and 258 metres to its roof level, with a design by London-based Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners.
Another major office tower is under construction just west of Union Station, where developer Cadillac Fairview is building the 46-storey 160 Front West, designed by AS + GG Architecture and B+H Architects. Excavation of the tower's underground levels continues to create anticipation online for the building's eventual 240-metre ascent.
Among the tallest towers under construction in Toronto, this condominium tower from Cresford Developments is set to rise 299 metres above Yonge Street. Designed by New York City-based Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates with Toronto-based architectsAlliance, YSL would stand as Canada's tallest building if completed today.
This massive three-tower community from Pinnacle International has begun construction at the foot of Yonge Street where the first of the complex's Hariri Pontarini Architects-designed towers is now rising. It will eventually be followed by two more including a 307-metre tower that would also be Canada's tallest if completed today.
4. Sugar Wharf Condominiums (Phase 1)
Menkes Developments' redevelopment of Toronto's LCBO Lands is now in full swing, with construction moving along on the community's B+H Architects-designed office tower at 100 Queens Quay and the first phase condominium towers in the site's northeast quadrant. The 64 and 70-storey first phase condos are designed by architectsAlliance, and will reach heights of 218 and 230 metres.
3. The One
Moving into our top three for the year, Mizrahi Developments' The One remained hot as construction progresses for the 85-storey, Foster + Partners and Core Architects-designed luxury hotel and condominium tower. At a height of 309 metres, this is yet another project that would claim the title of Canada's tallest if completed today, and is the tallest currently under construction.
2. CIBC SQUARE
Hines and Ivanhoé Cambridge are bringing a two-tower office complex to Downtown immediately east of Union Station. The first phase south tower of the WilkinsonEyre Architects and Adamson Associates Architects-designed complex has been under construction since 2017, and much construction progress in 2019 helped generate enough traffic to propel CIBC SQUARE to our #2 slot for the year.
1. The Well
With seven new buildings being constructed on what is the largest construction site in Toronto, The Well easily captured the top spot for most visited database file of the year. The massive project is being led by the team of developers RioCan REIT, Allied Properties REIT, Diamond Corp, Tridel, and Woodbourne Canada Management, and features design work by Hariri Pontarini Architects, architectsAlliance, Wallman Architects, Adamson Associates Architects, and BDP.
