Is there any other pedestrianized zone proposed by the city (other than John and Bloor?)
"Yonge will be designed with a pedestrian street weekend conversion in mind"
not a big fan of it. i think they should have it in somewhere else, not the busiest street in toronto
If there has to be room for deliveries on Yonge, they should have a limited number of lay-bys and the rest of the widened space should be a pedestrian-only sidewalk. =
Left turns at all intersections? Nooooo. If they allowed that, the middle lane would be backed up with cars, eventually pulling out into the active lane, therefore making the active lane come to a standstill at certain intersections. Like Dundas for example, or Queen. Bad idea.
As for the trees. I do not want to see Yonge tree lined downtown. It would not fit the feel of it at all. Not to mention how busy the sidewalks are. There's no room for trees, even if the sidewalks are made bigger.
Interesting - the plan doesn't match up with the rendering. The rendering shows all the planters pushed back from the new part of the sidewalk, leaving room for cars. The plans show planters along the edge, forming a physical barrier. This is exactly what is happening. There are lay-by cutouts in the sidewalks for deliveries which opens up the existing sidewalk closer to buildings for patios and other outside market opportunities. Patios on Yonge. Yes!
Street trees don't have to use much space - no more than a planting bed. Here's an idea: instead of having the patios next to the buildings, have the street trees and patios in the same amenity strip area along the street edge. Something like this. That still leaves plenty of room for widened sidewalks. Yeah I know, our nanny liquor laws get in the way...As for the trees. I do not want to see Yonge tree lined downtown. Actually now that Empress is gone I do prefer to see the site used a bit more intensively - just to hide that ugly and cheap 10 Dundas facade.
I wonder how the arson investigation is going. I would prefer to see rewards for developing this site going to innocent parties.
