There are many low income families livjng in kensington market areathat shop at the dufferin mall walmart location. Walmart determined that there was sufficient demand to support this location. I didn't hear a word from anyone (Adam Vaughan)when dollarama moved into spadina and adelaide. They will definitely drive a number of chinatown stores out of business, the quality of products is below walmart and they look the other way on their suplier's business practices.

Ya, it will be the very people who are against it that will end up shopping at Walmart. They're mostly hypocrite hipsters and hippies with nothing better to do than protest everything that isn't organic or vegetarian.
 
The only way they're going to get away with building this is if they cut it down to one floor and dedicate the half the plot to being public park space.

So basically it's not happening. The NIMBYism is strong in this area.

also, what proof do you have that the "very people who are against it will end up shopping there"? if they're opposed to Walmart, why would they go there? because they're "hypocrite hipsters"? whatever that is.

Fruit and Vegetables: Yes.

Groceries and pharmacy stuff: Yes--Zimmerman's, Valu-Mart, those health food stores etc.

Cheap household supplies/kitchen stuff: yep.

Toilet paper? Yep--see above.

Mexican food? Yep.

Meat, poultry, fish etc? Yep.

Is there plenty of free and cheap parking in Kensington? Yep.

So why do you think RIO CAN wants to build a Walmart etc here?

Here's what I see happening: Walmart gets built. Honest Ed's closes and goes midrise condo (maybe part of the "secret" plan? Possible....) Valu-Mart closes (Kensington nimbies protested its opening, esp the Zimmerman's clan) -- I say good riddance as it's overpriced, same goes for Zimmermans.

Some other "junk" shops in K-market close, replaced by more upscale yuppie organic eco whatever bs bars, eateries etc.

Rent increases so much eventually K-market goes midrise.

Such is life.

How long will Walmart be there? 40+ years imo. Many ppl don't have the luxury of time to shop in small indie shops. The condo crowd will shop there, the urban poor, and probably quite a number of Annex homeowners.

When I lived near Kensington Market where did I do majority of my shopping? Dominions (now Metro) at College & Shaw, Price Chopper (Queen & Dufferin), and Chinatown.

RIP over-priced dirty Kensington indie crap shops. :p

Walmart will probably accelerate the redevelopment of Bathurst Street. More retail, eventually more residential. Essentially, Spadina Av c. 1980 all over again.

You should know where this proposal is, it's on Bathurst at Nassau, which is three streets WEST of the heart of Kensington Market - no more than 700 feet. The Average person could walk from Augusta & Nassau to Bathurst & Nassau in 3 or 4 minutes. This retail giant will most definitely have an effect on the future of Kensington Market retailers, should it be built.
