Wal-Mart downtown Toronto?

?? They have tons of loss leaders. Most other big box stores do as well, so it's actually understandable given the market they are competing in.

What's stopping Wal-Mart from paying its employees a proper wage? It sure as hell isn't the government.

They asked to raise the U.S. minimum wage ages ago because they calculated it would further their attempt to bankrupt independent local competition.

Raising the minimum wage is no easy feat, it must be done delicately while levelling the ground for small and medium enterprises to cope. Walmart has never supported such a thing.

For minimum wages see Wikipedia as a start, at this link.

They already pay more then minimum wage. But I see you're set out to blame walmart of anything and everything not matter the facts.

Walmart workers rely on food stamps: Study

http://www.presstv.com/usdetail/306496.html

"Many Walmart workers rely on food stamps and other government aid programs to meet their basic needs as the giant retailer holds on to its minimum wage policy, warns a new study."

"This would cost American taxpayers as much as $900,000 for only one Walmart Supercenters in Wisconsin, the study released by Congressional Democrats on Thursday found."

"Walmart workers have long complained of low pay, poor working conditions and lack of benefits. They accuse the company of retaliating against those who bring these concerns to the management."

"Walmart CEO Michael Duke earned a staggering $20.7 million last year, while its full-time hourly employees make an average of just $8.81 per hour, according to a Bloomberg analysis."

If any rumours start circulating about "union" a team arrives from corporate to head off unionizing using any and all tactics available, legal or otherwise. Walmart is so afraid of unions they've literally closed down stores that have managed to unionize.

Are food stamps issued exclusively to Walmart employees?
Are food stamps issued to employees of other companies too?
Are food stamps issued to the non employed?
What's your point?

He posted an article that says the average wage for a walmart employee is $8.81. So what's your point in saying they "already pay more than minimum wage"? Does it matter when it's less than 9 dollars an hour? That's far less than the minimum wage in ontario. What do they pay their workers in Ontario? Do you even have any idea at all? Are you going to continue crapping up this thread with pointless babbling?

From the chart someone posted, US minimum wage is $7.25. If their employee is paid $8.81, that's above minimum wage.

Canada minimum wage is $9.76US. I'm sure if they were in Canada, they would be paid more than $9.76US.

I'm sure there are tons of companies in the US pay people $7.25. Lower than Walmart. If you say Walmart in the US should be paying people over $9. Then maybe the US should be thinking if increasing their minimum wage too. If people in Walmart need food stamps, I'm sure many people working at other minimum wage jobs need food stamps as well like McD and other chains.

Loblaws in Canada doesn't pay that well either. You start at minimum wage and take a long time to get raises. And that places them just above minimum wage by a bit.

I'm sure that's entirely walmarts fault too, should the base what they pay people not on their work, but on how much they want to spend every month? How much their mortgages are, or what they owe on their credit cards that month? What about their car payments?

Walmart's Death Grip on Groceries Is Making Life Worse for Millions of People

http://www.alternet.org/food/walmar...ons-people-hard-times-usa?page=0,0&paging=off

“Nationally, the retailer's share of the grocery market now stands at 25 percent. That's up from 4 percent just 16 years ago. Walmart's tightening grip on the food system is unprecedented in U.S. history. Even A&P — often referred to as the Walmart of its day — accounted for only about 12 percent of grocery sales at its height in the 1940s. Its market share was kept in check in part by the federal government, which won an antitrust case against A&P in 1946. The contrast to today's casual acceptance of Walmart's market power could not be more stark.â€

Let him spew his right wing agenda. He doesn't mind other people working for slave wages but I'm sure that would be unacceptable for him, his kids, mother or father but it's great for everyone else.

Walmart workers rely on food stamps: Study

I don't understand why this is a big deal. Nearly 50m Americans rely on foodstamps. Obviously a disproportionate number of those benefiting from programs like SNAP would be employed in low-wage or part time service sector employment.

Like, isn't this kind of pointing out the obvious that low-income workers tend to receive state benefits?

Is the suggestion that minimum wages should be set to eliminate low income workers?
