Union Station: Northwest PATH Expansion

This is a very short extension. I was under the impression this would be heading up to Wellington Street and actually connecting with the existing PATH at the west end of the TD Centre. Seems a cheap, short option is going to be Phase 1 of that.

I think the budget ($60M?) is for the entire extension, coming out of GO and it's already been budgeted.

Wonder if they have changed the design for the portal - the DRP wanted to have a single entrance with the design taking on a more iconic form. The renderings on the city website is prior to that process.

Contract award - from the Sept 12 Public Works and Infrastructure Committee:

http://www.toronto.ca/legdocs/mmis/2012/pw/bgrd/backgroundfile-49650.pdf

Of note:

A second construction phase will complete the connection to the existing PATH at York Street/Wellington Street. Completion of Phase 1 does not commit the City to the second phase of the project, nor are there any contractual obligations to the second phase of construction. The approved budget for the North West Path Extension is $66 Million and was based on the 2007 Environmental Assessment cost estimate. Significant design and delivery issues have arisen
during the design process. Updated cost estimates for the entire North West Path Extension to the existing PATH at York Street/Wellington Street are now estimated at about $100 Million, an increase of $34 Million. As such, undertaking Phase 2 of the North West Path will require additional funding. Staff will develop a funding strategy inclusive of federal and provincial contributions for Council's consideration and approval prior to tendering the Phase 2 works. (p. 2)

$100 million for a how-many-metre-long tunnel? 100 or 200 metres? Unbelievable.

Indeed - my guess is a lot of that has to do with all the infrastructure that will have to be removed/replaced for it to happen - a sobering thought for any DRL.

with numbers like that, an underground DRL does seem like an unrealistic expectation. If only there was more support/lobbying for a DRL using existing rail corridors retrofitted with ttc gauge and a third rail. As useful as the PATH system is, investing $100 million on a stretch that short seems beyond stupid.

sMT:

There isn't much choice - if the existing patterns hold, the PATH is going to get saturated from GO commuters alone.

Agreed -- renovating Union Station and increasing GO service without this connection would be ludicrous. I look at the cost as part of the overall GO/Union improvements. Plus it will be a useful connection for downtowners to get to and from all the office space in Southcore.

The work is, finally, starting:

University Avenue, Front Street and York Street affected by PATH construction work

Construction work to extend the PATH pedestrian tunnel network from Toronto's Union Station will result in a series of road and lane closures for Front Street, York Street and University Avenue during the remainder of this year and into 2013.

The work, which is being carried out in co-ordination with the Union Station Revitalization Project, will improve pedestrian access to and from Union Station and across the busy intersection of Front Street, York Street and University Avenue.

The following road and lane closures will take place:
- The section of University Avenue extending north from Front Street for about 30 metres will be reduced to a single lane northbound from November 19 until January 2013.
- Front Street east of York Street will be closed in both directions from January to October 2013.
- Motorists travelling westbound on Front Street from Bay Street will need to make a U-turn east of York Street and return in an eastbound direction. Motorists travelling eastbound on Front Street from Simcoe Street will be required to turn left onto University Avenue or right onto York Street. Left turns are not permitted from Bay Street to Front Street.
- As a result of the construction work, motorists who need to access the Royal York Hotel should travel westbound from Yonge Street.
- Vehicle access to Union Station is available via Bremner Boulevard.
- York Street from Front Street to Piper Street will be closed from January to December 2013.

Pedestrian access will be maintained during the road closures. Some sidewalks and pedestrian pathways may need to be closed for safety reasons when work is taking place overhead. The north crosswalk across York Street and University Avenue will be closed from November 19 to January 2013. Pedestrians will need to use the south crosswalk.

I'd love to see a (3D) map of what Toronto looks like underground, including the PATH, subways tunnels, concourses, parking garages, infrastructure, etc.

Am I reading this right... there closing a portion of York St for an entire year?
