TTC: Streetcar Network

I know, for a small investment, streetcar service could be restored.

Such things are too obvious for the TTC.

In 1996 they did look at replacing bus service on Coxwell with a streetcar route (Harbourfront, Dufferin & Ossington were also studied as well as other options) since there were surplus cars at the time. Transit Toronto has an article here: https://transit.toronto.on.ca/streetcar/4015.shtml

The report concluded Coxwell had potential, however the main drawbacks seemed to be concern the existing bus loop turns would be too tight, and peak hour ridership being only 420, which is far below their threshold for streetcar service.

420? What a funny number. Back on topic, Coxwell indeed had potential. But, it actually would have not required too much track to be bui;t, compared to Dufferin and Ossignton which would hav required quite a bit of track.
 
One thought I had on a Coxwell extension was to simply run it into a Danforth Garage paid area with a tunnel punched through to Coxwell mezzanine. This would avoid some of the congestion endemic to the Coxwell-Danforth intersection. But Danforth Garage is being turned into a cop shop so that's out.

There are two infrastructure issues to bear in mind - the GO bridge south of Hanson Street, the centre support of which pinches traffic to one lane each way, and the large sewer main running under Coxwell. There is also a steep grade up from Gerrard as far as Danforth.

If a portal could be done north of Gerrard, this would allow a streetcar tunnel to rise at a gentler grade and pass under Line 2, but that would be an expensive platform to construct, and there would be sensitivity to disruption of emergency vehicle access from Danforth up Coxwell to East General Hospital depending on the construction method. Parallel bus service would need to remain as there would be no business case to construct intermediate stations. However, were the track extended beyond Danforth then the major trip generator of East General Hospital (plus the East York Civic Centre and connections to the 62 Mortimer) would be an appealing destination especially if a loop and station/operator rest facility could be done under the East York Civic lawn.

All in all it's almost certainly too pricey to do - the only thing which might have moved the needle would have been a SmartTrack station at Coxwell but that's not happening.

At some of the vase and sprawling Taj Mahal subway stations in the suburbs, the bus terminal is located a fare walking distance, with underground passages.
Using underground passageways, under the cop shop parking lot and Danforth Garage, could still be a shorter walk than some of the suburban stations.

A tunnel longer than a football field to get to the Coxwell TTC route?

How is this an upgrade from the existing bus stop that's virtually on top of the subway tunnel?

I admit putting an entrance from the mezzanine outside into the city property near the Bus Terminal Diner would be useful for pedestrians, and provide better walking access to Danforth.

However moving the surface platform to south of the apartment building south of Danforth won't help transit! I don't know why anyone is suggesting anything like this.

The only problem is the annoying automobile gods...
 
As in with so few routes serving Coxwell, getting rid of the parking lot can do .
Parking is more for shopping, nearby library. Nearby restaurants.

I don't think too many people - if any - are driving here every day and taking the subway at $9 a day - $13 if you stay until 6:30 pm. TTC Victoria Park lot is only $4.

Which station do you park at?
 
You can't fool me! That's some engineering students dressed up to look like TTC staff with their new 'electric truck' that steals electricity from the TTC's catenary. That tank at the back is full of beer.

Maybe Ford's cabinet are dressing up as TTC staff. Thats kind of sounds possible.[/QUOTE]
