Project description and purpose
TTC’s Easier Access Program makes subway stations accessible to everyone, regardless of their level of mobility with the addition of new elevators (at the main entrance). New elevators are planned for Old Mill Station in order to take customers from street level to platform level.

As a first step in the design process for the new elevators, Old Mill Station and the local area will be surveyed.

Land surveying and related activities
Activities may include field staff gathering measurements and placing survey markers at property corners and elsewhere. Field staff will attempt to contact building/home occupants directly should access to private areas be required. In most instances, access to properties is for a short duration. The field crew will consist of staff wearing reflective vests.

Survey area
Staff will be surveying the surrounding area of the station east of Old Mill Trail, and in King’s Mill Park beneath the subway up until the western edge of the parking lot.

Expected survey dates and hours
Beginning in the station the week of July 30, 2018, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., surveyors will be present in the Old Mill Station area (weather permitting).

For Old Mill they should look at adding a second exit at the same time. Have a set of stairs and an elevator into the park (with the elevator electronics on the roof for flood protection). Encourage more people to walk in the park.

I will be difficult to put an elevator up to Old Mill Trail. I don't know how much land the TTC owns on either side of the building.

I used to work behind Old Mill station and can say that this idea is a non-starter. First off, the shaft down to the park would be expensive as it is not exactly a 10 foot drop. Putting electronics on the roof simply is not good enough there as the park gets flooded during the spring thaw. The elevator pit and likely the shaft would fill up with water.

Also, I would like to point out that the TTC tried this in the 1970s at St Clair West station. There is a set of doors (now sealed) that lead to the Nordheimer Ravine. These doors were sealed because there were safety concerns with an exit directly into a ravine. No doubt there would be similar concerns with an exit directly into Kings Mill park. The park is very much secluded, poorly lit and abandoned at night likely leading to questions about letting people access it after dark. Quite literally, nobody would hear you scream there given the distance from the bridge to the park.

Also, I would like to point out that the TTC tried this in the 1970s at St Clair West station. There is a set of doors (now sealed) that lead to the Nordheimer Ravine. These doors were sealed because there were safety concerns with an exit directly into a ravine.

I believe the concern at the time was that "unsavoury" people were "attracted" to the isolated location. It was unsafe at night and the TTC opted to close it. Similar situations arose around the same time at St Patrick and Queens Park wherein the TTC revamped safety.

That has happened before actually. When the Garbage Train went up in flames back in 2000 the station was a disaster and the main entrance was impassable. I recall watching BT that morning to see video footage of smoke billowing out of the stations front doors.

What would likely need to happen is a corridor being constructed stretching from the bridge to the street or from where the bridge starts up the side of the hill via the service platform alongside the windows.

A staircase from the bridge portion of the station to the park would probably not be up to fire code or AODA compliant. Keep in mind there is a certain amount of time that can elapse for a full evacuation. Add to that there needs to be a way out for the disabled. Unless you have a winch and platform those using a wheelchair, walker or scooter cannot use the stairs.

It might because you cannot have a pit just hanging there. It would have to be card access though. Think of it like St George, you cannot have an elevator running between the street and only the upper platform.

From the looks of this one, it almost looks like that one of the elevators will be outside of the fare paid area for two stops one for outside and the other for a parking garage. I wonder if it will have a fare gate in front of it on the concourse level and on the platform level?
