Markham York University: Markham Centre Campus | 56.08m | 13s | York University | Diamond Schmitt

The approval was announced by the province today. No word on when it will open.

Province supports new York University - Markham Centre Campus in Partnership with Seneca College
http://news.ontario.ca/tcu/en/2015/05/university-education-closer-to-home.html

One thing that jumped out at me was this;

In spring 2016, Ontario will also issue a second targeted call for proposals for a postsecondary facility to serve the growing demand for postsecondary options in Peel and Halton regions. After York Region, Peel and Halton are the fastest-growing areas of the province and are currently underserved in terms of local postsecondary capacity.

I'd never heard of this proposal. I was doing some digging and came across this news release;

Leaders in Halton Region are putting their support behind Sheridan’s journey to become a university. At this week’s regular meeting of regional council, they voted in favour of Sheridan’s plan to expand postsecondary education options in the Western Greater Toronto Area.

Anyone ever heard of any other contenders?

Glad that the Markham plan is right beside Unionville station. Can we ensure that any new postsecondary schools are located on regional rapid transit corridors?

Unfortunately, both of the main Sheridan campuses as well as UTM are not located within walking distance of either regional or local rapid transit.

At least Sheridan Oakville is on Trafalgar, which can conceivably support high order transit at some point. Can't imagine that will ever happen for Mississauga Road/Collegeway for UTM - and it's located on a site that's most awkward in terms of access.

Yeah, it's not perfect, but it's only 3KM. A little less once the station expands east of Trafalgar road. IIRC, a BRT for Trafalgar road has been talked about before.

Brampton has been pushing for a university satellite campus for years. Right now, it has to settle for a few classrooms and distance education facilities for tiny Algoma University. The old OPP Academy site (now the Flower City Community Campus) at Queen and McLaughlin is the planned site, though it's a bit too far to walk from Downtown Brampton and its GO Station and planned LRT. That might be the Peel Region site.

If Dixie Cup (Georgia-Pacific) closes, I think that might be a better location, along with the light industrial land immediately to the north; the surrounding low-density residential area could be redeveloped over time. Even better would be a downtown campus, built in the GO Transit station lands, the Old Shoe Factory building, the Dominion Skate Factory shell, and across the OBRY tracks in the light industrial (former foundary) building off of Rosedale Avenue.

Sheridan College's Brampton campus is building an improved bus loop in their site that would allow buses to directly access it from Steeles Avenue; the 511 Steeles Zum extension is planned for the fall. Not great, but definitely could be worse.

Worse like Milton's ridiculous Laurier satellite campus, to be built next to the PanAm velodrome, in the middle of nowhere, as far as you can get from Milton's GO Station and downtown core.

I think another good site for a Brampton PSE-institution would be something health focused on the lands near PMH. Would be peripheral downtown.

The Laurier Milton plan was rejected. I'm actually surprised by that. It was among the most well-developed (publicly known) plans in the running, albeit in the wrong location within Milton. York announced their bid comically "late" compared to some of the other contenders. But apparently they were developing the plan for a long time and were basically surprise questioned by the mayor of Vaughan which gave away their cards about a month before publicly announcing their bid with Markham.

Wow. So York-Markham, a site with good transit access from several directions was approved, while Laurier-Milton was rejected? That news just made my day.

Ontario Supporting First University Campus In York Region
June 9, 2017

Ontario is investing in a new York University campus in Markham--the first university campus in York Region--that will expand postsecondary education opportunities for students and families and help equip students with the skills they need for the jobs of today and tomorrow.

Michael Chan, MPP for Markham--Unionville, was joined by Steven Del Duca, MPP for Vaughan, and Helena Jaczek, MPP for Oak Ridges--Markham to make the announcement today at the Markham PanAm Centre.

The new university campus will serve an estimated 4,000 students in York Region, with the potential for more students over time. The campus will offer a broad range of business, arts and social science-related programs, and provide students with opportunities for research, experiential learning and collaboration to help them prepare for the highly skilled jobs of the future.

Ontario is making the largest infrastructure investment in hospitals, schools, public transit, roads and bridges in the province's history. To learn more about what's happening in your community, go to Ontario.ca/BuildON.

Investing in more postsecondary options for students and families is part of our plan to create jobs, grow our economy and help people in their everyday lives.

QUICK FACTS
  • Ontario is investing $127 million to build the new York University campus in Markham.
  • Following an open call for proposals, York University's proposal to build a Markham-Centre Campus was selected in May 2015 by the province.
  • The City of Markham is the fourth-most populous community within the Greater Toronto Area, York region's most populous municipality and Canada's 16th largest city.
  • The new Markham campus will be located north of Highway 407 between Kennedy Road and Warden Avenue in York Region.
  • Research shows that every $100 million of public infrastructure investment in Ontario boosts the gross domestic product by $114 million, particularly in the construction and manufacturing sectors.
  • York will offer both undergraduate and graduate programs at this new campus and will also partner with Seneca College to offer several joint academic programs that will showcase the strengths of each institution.

I read the announcement a few times but couldn't find any "news". Is there anything announced here that we didn't know previously?

Yes, "Ontario is investing $127 million." It was approved in principal before but without any funding. No surprise though...
