Toronto Queens Quay & Water's Edge Revitalization | ?m | ?s | Waterfront Toronto

The traffic mess exists during times like Caribana or when the Gardiner or Lake Shore is closed. It's not a daily occurrence at all.

I don't think QQ should be used as a commuter road anyway, unless there is a problem with the Gardiner or Lake Shore. It's a local road that should be used to access the waterfront. Also, there's enough foot traffic during Caribana and other summer festivals that it would be nice if they could close off the entire street for that weekend. Reconfigure the parking so all lots can be accessed from the intersecting roads.

Got to thank Toronto Hydro again for this delay. What transit route has Hydro not screw up the construction schedule?

Since Hydro couldn't get the rate hike they wanted, this project got place on hold. Now some money has been found for them to do the work, it will get underway in a month or 2. 2 years of construction by EllisDon for this first phase.

Once more money is found, the east section can start.

Was on the QQ today for this section and could not find this traffic mess I have being hearing about for years, to the point the 4 lanes should stay to deal with it. Peak time was one of my times.

The streetcars are running on red flag tracks.

What's the first phase exactly ?

What's the first phase exactly ?

Phase 1 is from Spadina to Bay.
Phase 2 is Bay to Parliament
Phase 3 is Cherry St from King St to Mills Rd
Phase 4 is rebuilt Union Loop and a toss up phase.
Phase 5 extending Cherry St line to the Shipping Channel and connecting to QQ.
Phase 6 the Villiers line to Commission St, east of the Don Parkway, as Commissioner St is to disappear in this area, if the plan stay in place.
Phase 7 extending the Commissioner line to Leslie St.
Phase 8 Spadina to Bathurst
Phase 9 extending the Cherry St line to Unwin and then over to Leslie St.

All phases are subject to change due to funding. Phase 2 was to happen at the same time as Phase 1, but no funding for it now.

Steve Munro reports:

Queen’s Quay Service

Because the track continues to deteriorate on Queen’s Quay in anticipation of the much-delayed reconstruction project, the Spadina and Harbourfront services will be split off from each other. Harbourfront cars will operate from Union to Exhibition with a short turn service to Spadina. Spadina cars will operate from Bloor to Queen’s Quay.

The scheduled headways on the two branches of the Harbourfront line do not blend, and this will almost certainly produce erratic service by design. On Spadina, the substantial demand “around the corner” from stops between Front and Queen’s Quay bound for points east and Union Station will be interrupted by the split operation.

From the March 28 WT Board Meeting CEO Report:

Queens Quay Design
The 75% Engineering Design was submitted to the City on February 28, 2012 and Waterfront Toronto is working through their comments. Waterfront Toronto intends to deliver the 90% Engineering Design to the City in early May for final sign-off prior to tendering the work, anticipated in June.

Queens Quay Construction Schedule
The project has been delayed by two months from the original schedule, due primarily to uncertainty surrounding Toronto Hydro’s advance utility works. On January 5, 2012, Toronto Hydro’s capital budget was thrown into uncertainty by a ruling of the Ontario Energy Board, and on January 31, 2012, Toronto Hydro notified Waterfront Toronto that their planned expansion project within Queens Quay was on hold, forcing a complete renegotiation of the proposed electrical system with TTC. On March 13, 2012, after evaluating the alternatives through a series of coordination meetings with Waterfront Toronto, Toronto Hydro reversed their decision and has decided to restart their planned expansion project in April, two months later than originally scheduled. Compounding the problem is a recent decision by the TTC not to share electrical ducts with Toronto Hydro in the future, which requires another redesign of the electrical supply system which we hope to complete in April.

Permits
Prior to starting construction, we must obtain a Road Cut Permit. Once the 90% Engineering Design is submitted, it will require approximately two months to obtain the permit, meaning actual construction will be able to start in late June or early July. We are working closely with City staff to ensure that they are in a position to process these permit requests as quickly as possible. (p. 2)

so the streetcars have been shutdown between spadina and union for emergency track repairs until May 7th... could that be a sign of yet another serious delay in the process?

They did this last year too, though I don't understand why they don't just keep running the buses if construction is going to start in June/July as was stated upthread.

No, it is a sign the tracks should have been replaced a couple of years ago and the delays to date are starting to seriously impare operations.

Or at least it might, if the closure had anything to do with the state of the tracks - which in this case it doesn't.

The TTC originally was going to run a separate shuttle service between Union and Spadina for this board period due to the condition of the tracks and all of the slow orders - but they were going to keep running streetcars.

Then Hydro came to them and said that they are going to start some of the preliminary work on QQ West, and that they were going to have to pull the streetcars as some of the work was in the ROW. Apparently whatever work needs to be done will only take a couple of weeks, meaning that the TTC also has the ability to do a bit of work to the tracks (if they so choose) to slow down the deterioration.

That said, yes, the tracks should have been replaced two or three years ago.

This isn't exactly related but does anyone no the status of the portland slip ? That's the one near Ireland park ?

From the same board meeting minutes:

Portland Water’s Edge
Waterfront Toronto has identified three prequalified bidders for the promenade construction and is currently tendering the project. We anticipate awarding the contract before the end of April and completing construction by the end of the summer.

Ah sorry about that, I just checked out the PDF. Great thanks.

How often do those sort of meetings take place ? It seems to have the most updates. The newsletter they public every month is OK.

Curious how sales of Monde are doing and when the first Hines project should go to market, they referred to it above, sometime this year potentially.
