Apologies if this has been asked before, but what's the deal with the footings that look like excavated Roman columns? When did those go in? And why do they look all broken-off like that?

They are piles for the foundation I am guessing (anyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong about that)

And speaking of water, it looks as though they're having some water issues at the north end of the site. Did you notice if those pipes were for drying it up? I seem to recall someone mentioning that there is an underground river nearby or underneath.

That wouldn't be difficult to calculate if you had the area of the hole and the depth.
