Toronto Backstage On The Esplanade | 116.73m | 36s | Cityzen | P + S / IBI

Doesn't look like much progress at all with this site.

This is one of the more interesting sites with respect to the shoring and excavation process - two different elevations (track level, top of the berm, and street level on the Esplanade frontage) combined with a relatively narrow site. The shoring on top of the berm was done first, and then excavation of the berm was done to bring the south part of the site down to ground level, so shoring could be done along Esplanade and beside the Green P parking garage entrance.

I guess if you just look at the flat piece of ground with the shoring along Esplanade underway, it may look like not much has happened - but the site sure did not start out that way.
 
I still can't believe a big tower can be built in such a tight place. With the L tower across, it will certainly change the Yonge Esplanade corner!

It wont be long before that strip of land behind the Dominion Public Bldg. (1 Front west) gets developed..10 years ago there was a conceptual plan for development (cant remember the architectural firm) which included a bus terminal to be build overtop and behind there.

Why is it that the the Southcore plot has steal beams sticking up above grade (which I assume is for the event of a train derailment) but such reinforcement wasn't required here. I am to understand that the same was required at the Milan site and is (at least part) of the reason it rose so slowly initially.
Am I completely off base?

I am not sure it it is too late for a crash protection barrier to be built for Backstage - it may come yet. Secondly, there is a difference between the two sites - Backstage is beside tracks used by passenger trains as they pull into the Union Station platforms, while the south set of tracks, the ones beside Southcore, are used for the freight trains (typically two a day, one mid day, the other late evening) which pull right by Union Station on the outside track, without stopping. These freight trains service all the sidings from Etobicoke through Mississauga, Oakville and Burlington, to the point where the main CN line rejoins the Lakeshore line by the intersection of Highways 407, QEW and 403 to Hamilton.

From my understanding, the big issue causing much of the delay (so far) with Milan was the manner in which the demolition activities were to be handled, to mitigate any risks of debris falling onto or otherwise impacting the Yonge Street subway line. Right after the demolition activities started, they were put on hold because of concerns raised by the TTC.

With respect to crash barriers at the Milan site - my presumption would be that they would be similar (ie.e structural reinforcement of the wall) to what other buildings which have been built in comparable proximity to a TTC subway line would have required.
 
Backstage's podium, which will have parking spaces facing the tracks, will be built with an integrated crash wall.

Oh I had no doubt that a reinforced crash barrier would be built into the podium, I was referring to the interim when they'll have a massive 6 story hole with nothing between it and the tracks. I should have been more clear. But I believe your post clears it up anyway.

From L Tower and Backstage construction update site

Tuesday, April 10
Subcontractor, Deep Foundation, will be installing a second row of tie backs.
Subcontractor, GFL Excavating will be removing material from the site: 4 dump trucks will take 5 loads each, for a total of 20 loads.
Wednesday, April 11
Subcontractor, Deep Foundation, will be delivering a drill rig to the site at 1 The Esplanade after 9 am, under police escort.
There will be short-term disruptions to vehicular and pedestrian traffic. The construction management team apologizes for any short-term inconvenience this may cause.

Backstage is moving along with excavation. The L Tower's parking (as some of you know) is going in below grade on the Backstage site. And yes a tunnel will be bored to connect the parking garage to the L Tower.
