Re: PCL: Metropolis Update June 1/06

It's good to hear Olympic Spirit is closed. Hopefully they can find a good tenant for the building that will upgrade the exterior. Apple would be nice.

Re: PCL: Metropolis Update June 1/06

Apple just opened in the Eaton Centre so it won't be them.

Re: PCL: Metropolis Update June 1/06

thanks for the article nstuch.

I can't wait for metropolis to be completed. The cinema will be a great addition to dundas square and, along with he Canadian Tire/future shop ensure a lively and vibrant Dundas Square/ Tonge Street!

Re: PCL: Metropolis Update June 1/06

It will not be an Indigo/Chapters as there is already one in Eaton Centre (and they recently closed their Coles location in Eaton Centre because the mall could not support two bookstores).

Re: PCL: Metropolis Update June 1/06

I think the museum is a bad idea too. Bring on more crass commercialism!

By the way there is a beautiful beaux-arts heritage building on Yonge opposite the Eaton Centre that is sitting empty. Perhaps it would make a nice home for Ryerson's photo collection. It is said these photos are iconic. I don't know much about it. Would it be a tourist draw?

I wouldn't call it "good," but its failure is certainly not surprising. If not for its horrible execution, something good might have come of it. For all the whining I read on this forum about Toronto not having a distinctive attraction, there was only one Olympic Spirit complex on the planet. Its a shame they couldn't do it right.

they weren't even able to get the damn ticker turned on

The inherited an amazing collection of photos. I don't think Torch would do them justice.

Re: PCL: Metropolis Update June 1/06

Does anyone know how it's set up? How many square feet and how many levels?

Re: PCL: Metropolis Update June 1/06

I've only ever attended the top part with the patio. I think that could be turned into something very cool. It's certainly spacious inside, but I don't know about the other parts of the building.

Re: PCL: Metropolis Update June 1/06

ratoronto, it is possible to get access to any G&M article through google news. try going to news.google.ca and searching on john barber.. his latest column is always one of the first two or three links.. same with any other inside subscriber article

Re: PCL: Metropolis Update June 1/06

Oddly enough, while this thread has been filling up with Olympic Spirit talk, the Olympic Spirit thread in the Out and About section is full of Metropolis talk. Just to switch back to Metropolis here...

Between the current Metropolis leasing pdf (available at penequity's website) and the previous one dating from March, there are lots of little changes besides it losing the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.

Levels 5 and 6: were to house the Cdn Music Hall of Fame, but aren't shown on this plan, and weren't on last either. Isn't it going to be rather tough to lease out these levels? Or is the building being curtailed a bit?

Level 4: Boston Pizza is gone now, and the Wolfgang Puck Cafe loses space in favour of Jam Rocks. (Googling "Jam Rocks" turns up nothing restauranty. It doesn't show up at WolfgangPuck.com either.)

Level 3: The food court has been reconfigured: it will now have some seating facing Yonge Street, so I am assuming that there will be windows added that weren't there before. That's good. Two more of the spots have been leased since March.

Level 2: No change

Level 1: One of two escalator banks to take people down to the concourse has been removed.

Concourse 1: Major reconfiguration to accommodate Shoppers Drug Mart, floor nearly fully leased.

Concourse 2: not on plan, but another escalator bank exists on Concourse 1 to take people down a level.

So, mysteries remain...

Try JamRock Sports Bar and Grill. I've never seen one in North America, but I occasionally ate there when I was working in Jamaica.

Actually, a quick Google just revealed to me that there is a Jamrocks Island Grill in Scarborough. But the theme looks the same.

Jamaican food. Jerk, curried goat, etc.
