Rob Ford's Toronto

I must admit, this thread has been, and hopefully will continue to be, an education for me. :)

heartily seconded.

i arrived at this thread -- quite literally by accident -- after climbing out of the cesspool that is the comment boards of the major dailies. it has taken a month or more of my own personal detox to see clearly again.

there are an awful lot of smart, literate, observant and courteous people here.

oh, and my faith in humanity has finally been restored.

As is Ward 29 candidate John Papadakis. He was an East York city councillor in the early 90s, a failed PC candidate in the 1993 federal election and then actually got endorsed by the local NDP MPP and riding association in his unsuccessful attempt to unseat Case Ootes in 2003. He also ran unsuccessfully for mayor of Fort Erie back in 2011.

He switches parties and/or cities whenever he sees opportunity for his moronic ideas. He's like a nutty Greek version of Mammo.

Don't forget about ward 20 candidate Mike Yen who ran on the Ford mantra in 2010, gave generously to Rob's campaign and then ran provincially as a pc. He signed up after it became clear that Adam Vaughan was running federally. Mike started Tedra..Toronto Entertainment District Residents Association and cheers for all the same Ford nonsense. He sent out glossy magazines (which must've cost in the thousands) in the fall which were rumoured to be sponsored by a casino lobbyist. Hint: all the info contained within was proofiness positive towards casinos and functioned as an old west "wanted dead or alive" poster.

And....Angelo Carnevale running in ward 4 who gave a substantial donation to Rob Ford last time around...

There would need to be direct evidence of a quid pro quo for any charges and absent wiretaps or affidavits I very much doubt there's that. That's why you have integrity commissioners and rules about conflicts of interests, because petty corruption often doesn't rise to the level of a chargeable criminal offence.

I am strongly of the opinion that the Fords need to be booted out of office by the electorate. I hope they get charged with whatever's coming to them too, but the electorate is the only body that the great whining titty-ass criminal man-baby-gangsters can't actually accuse of playing politics with them.

They will always find a way to move the goalposts. When Rob says "people" want something, he means people who agree with him.

When a constituent disagrees with them, it's "get elected to council before you go talking about city business!"

When a councillor disagrees with them, it's "your constituents should vote you out!".

When the media report disagreeable things about them, it's because the media maggots are meanly singling them out for bad behaviour that everyone else must be guilty of.

I won't be surprised if, when Rob is defeated in the election, they simply claim that Ford Nation voted correctly and if only the media hadn't undermined Rob at every turn he would have been rightfully re-elected per their wishes.

"While driving today, I happened upon Rob Ford's house. It was shocking. It look like a druggie's rental. Unkempt and dilapidated"

I don't plan on doing a drive-by to see for myself, but is it that bad?

It's a very simple white up unrenovated bungalow on a fair size lot. Not what you might expect of a millionaire mayor.

Certainly does not compare to Doug's house. His was renovated not that long ago and a second storey was added.

Note in this article that Doug obligingly explained why he was at the meeting...

"I don't discuss clients".

Clearly, Doug was there explicitly to represent Deco's interests, and those of Deco's "clients".

Hilariously, Mr. Wachsberg says: "...he didn’t know how the Fords came to involve themselves in so many municipal issues concerning his company." He's obviously very naive.

Yet this local business owner and, um, *cough* Deco Client *cough* has no issue writing an email to the Bros. Ford saying:

"The response is very unexpected and we are very disappointed in the result..."

A Million $ client. Pissed off. Doug wasn't there for civic interests. Although the conflict thereof seems to have plausibly arisen. But of course, that's "Bullshit". You can, apparently, quote Doug on that.

I think The Star made a mistake releasing that article on a Saturday. Or is Toronto now jaded with Rob Ford? I have heard NOBODY talking about it today, where as not long ago every single wrong turn he made was talked about in every coffee line.

We have a dedicated "Rob Ford 24/7" chatroom on our internal IM at work.

Maybe we're just young hipsters or whatever, but I think people are talking.

I won't be surprised if some of the FN die hards claim they were stabbed in the back by the media.

I felt that when Doug took his rehab "proof" to the CBC, rather than Joe W.

A lot of it is rather awkward to bring up in polite company.

The details in that article are so far out there, and so hard to relate to, pretty much no one has anything beyond "wow" or "holy shit" or "what a pig" and we still added about 50-60 pages here from Friday night, when it came out about 8:30.

Among people who still read papers (not just/only websites) Saturday is a paper they sit down and ... read.

That non-reaction simply speaks to the fact that no one is surprised by the drunken antics of the racist, mysogynistic, homophobic drug addict Rob Ford. Today's story in the G&M IS catching fire in a huge way and Doug's 9 "no comments" in a row is promising.

Fight their sloganeering with real slogans. When they spit out "Customer Service Excellence" reply back with "Deco customer service excellence".....Most transparent" becomes "Transparently corrupt" etc.

All of the salacious antics are now common knowledge. Supporters though moved the goalposts for what is acceptable and trustworthy in an elected official. It's time for the BIG PUSH reinforcing the brothers influence peddling AND corruption AND conflicts of interest until they too become part of that common knowledge.

Re Ford's residence - reports have always described it as modest etc. - I guess Ford was probably planning a reno hence his application to buy the public land adjacent. If no one's been around the house for a bit it's going to look messy, especially after this winter.

As for why no one's going on about Fri's story, I hope it's because it's gross and people have had enough. A lot of comments I've seen indicate some people believe it was recycled news (I guess any kind of dirtbag behaviour is just expected now). I trust with the influence story someone will file a complaint somewhere. Seems Ford Fatigue is truly setting in - hopefully among Ford Nation too.
