Rob Ford's Toronto

If it were diabetes though and he was experiencing periods of intoxication without consuming any intoxicating substances I would have expected that he'd be in to see his doctor pretty quickly. This behaviour has been going on for years now.

Edit: Just read AoD's comment. dt_toronto_geek: Are you thinking he knows he's a diabetic and is ashamed to say it, or are you thinking that he has diabetes and just doesn't know it yet?

Wasn't it the Globe that was allegedly sitting on something "big"?

Maybe. So many scandals, it's hard to keep track.

I'm only throwing this out there for consideration, could it be possible that he doesn't have a drinking problem and hasn't been seen drinking because he's diabetic? Given his weight problem it's a possibility. I don't know much about diabetes but I've known people who, when their glucose levels are too low or high (not sure which), who can appear intoxicated, red in the face & eyes (we've seen plenty of that), act like they are under the influence and even emit an alcohol-like smell from their breath. Far be it from me to defend this man, but it's something that came to mind.

Along those lines, I wondered if the mayor might be on Antabuse, but relapsing. This would explain both the lack of Drunk-Ford sightings in the last year, and the weird stuff happening lately. According to Dr. Google,

If you drink while taking antabuse, you can experience these symptoms:

Flushing
Nausea
Copious Vomiting
Sweating
Thirst
Throbbing in the Head and Neck
Throbbing Headache
Respiratory Difficulty
Chest Pain
Palpitations
Dyspnea
Hyperventilation
Tachycardia
Hypotension
Syncope
Marked Uneasiness
Weakness
Vertigo
Blurred Vision
Confusion

I wasn't really thinking either, just that diabetes might be an explanation. It's true that if it's been going on this long he'd know and he'd be treating himself, perhaps it's just his bullheaded "strong-man" style to keep his medical issues private. Surely this man has medical issues of some type (high cholesterol and hypertension come to mind) yet we know of none.

^I know (hope?) the suggestions above are a bit of a piss-take, so while we're at it can we also speculate as to whether aliens might have gotten to poor Mr. Ford? What about flouride in the drinking water? Microwaves? NO WAIT! It was those god-damned wind turbines!

Also, I'm loving Dim Tim Hudak's falling into the Ford morass. Couldn't happen to a better man.

I'm inclined to believe them when they say they haven't seen him drinking. One of the classic indications of addicition is hiding it.

I think the greater worry, for both Mr. Ford personally and the city he was elected to lead is that the Mayor hasn't hit bottom yet.

I do not believe I have ever seen Rob Ford where he wasn't exhibiting the bolded symptoms.

Hard to say though. So many symptoms mean many things. I read the H&S posters about stroke symptoms, and it seems to me most of them match those of a hang-over.

After reading some of the sensational details in the Star what amazes me is none of this was captured on video?

Inside the Bier Markt, according to restaurant staff and a Ford staffer, Ford and his small group went into a private room. They appeared intoxicated and were rambunctious. The restaurant staffer told the Star Ford was “incoherent†and “hammered.†......At one point, Ford ventured onto the dance floor. The DJ who worked that night told the Dean Blundell radio show the mayor was fighting and “carrying on like an idiot.†He was then escorted out by security. Restaurant staff say he was asked to leave after “storming the dance floor.â€
A senior staffer with Ford told the Star that Ford was escorted out by his own staff and some restaurant staff. The staffer said the mayor made another leap for the dance floor, then was told to leave and he walked out.

There must have been hundreds of people inside the Bier Markt with camera phones and not one person captured this on video? Also why is the Star reporting on what Ford did at the Bier Markt? He was not on official business but enjoying his private time on St. Patrick's day. I don't recall the Star intruding into David Miller or Dalton McGuinty's private lives. As long as Ford is not driving drunk or turning up for work drunk (as was the practice with former Liberal Attorney General Michael Bryant) I'm not sure that this should be anyone's business. How many people reading this had one too many drinks on St. Patrick's day? (I know I did). Should we all be checking ourselves into rehab?

UPDATE: On the John Tory show he just read a statement from the organizer of the Garrison Ball - Mark McQueen - who states that "at no time was Ford asked to the leave the Ball by either the organizers or Councillor Ainslie".

It looks like the Star's story is starting to fall apart. I bet Kevin Donovan regrets attaching his good name to this tabloid piece.

EDIT: http://www.newstalk1010.com/News/localnews/blogentry.aspx?BlogEntryID=10522851

As a civilian member of the volunteer organizing committee of the 2013 Toronto Garrison Ball, I

can confirm that I did not ask Rob Ford, Mayor of Toronto, to leave the event on February 23,

2013 for any reason. To my knowledge, no member of the event’s organizing committee,

including Councillor Paul Ainslie, directed the Mayor to leave the event that night.

The evening of February 23rd was a tremendous opportunity to join so many of the men and

women who have served our Nation so honourably at home and abroad. In the past twelve

months alone, Toronto-area soldiers, sailors and airmen and women have been asked to step in

harm’s way in such places as Afghanistan, the Caribbean Sea, Libya, Mali, the Pacific, Sierra

Leone, and off the coast of Somalia.

The evening built bridges within the community, while raising needed funds for the Wounded

Warriors, a non-profit organization that helps Canadian Forces members who have been

wounded or injured in their service to Canada. As we approach the 200th anniversary of the

Battle of York in April 2013, none of us should ever forget that Canada remains free to this day

due to the service and sacrifice of so many, both present and past.

Yours sincerely,

Darrell Bricker

Lyndsey Fisk-Calhoun

Maureen Harquail

Caroline Mulroney Lapham

Mark McQueen

Is it? Now what motive would right-wing Ford supporter Ainslie have in lying to the Star?

Meanwhile Councillor Doucette has confirmed that “it has been known at City Hall for quite a while that he may have a drinking problem.” and that "other councillors have reported, “for at least a year,” seeing Ford appearing intoxicated at “festivals, galas, and other evening events.”"

I bet Kevin Donovan regrets attaching his good name to this tabloid piece.
Do you doubt that Rob Ford is an alcoholic? Do you doubt he has used cocaine since becoming mayor?
