Rob Ford's Toronto

From an in law with a cottage 5 mins from Greenstone and in the loop on mactier/bracebridge gossip: the facility is not regarded as a real rehab, is rumoured to have mob connections, and a go to place to get blow in the area.

LOL. Nice to hear the taxpayers are paying 28k do tend to Robbie's rehab.

As it’s a slow news day, I would like to remind us that the reason that RoFo the councillor from Etobi-Coke ran for mayor was the Ford family’s ambition.

I refer also to Kevin Donovan’s comment “For reasons I’ve never figured out, people are nervous about speaking out against Rob Ford.”

Slander, threats of litigation, rumoured visits from heavies of varying flavours, inappropriate influence from the mayor’s office ... No surprise that many feel intimidated. It’s Thuggery and Buggery 101.

The worst part is that there was a crew of political professionals behind RoFo who knew exactly what the Fords were, starting at City Hall, right around Queen’s Park and all the way to Harper’s office. And they just didn’t care. It was cheap support for a vision of a meaner, nastier, less equal society the likes of which most of us have never experienced in Canada.

Was all this worth a few bucks back on our municipal taxes and the opportunity to fart in the general direction of City Hall? It left some brown skid marks, I reckon.

When the Ford movie is made, it should be made by Mike Judge. Not only are his Beavis and Butthead credentials a good fit, his movie Idiocracy is almost a blueprint for Ford Nation.

I totally get why people are scared to speak out about him. It's not just people around him, Doolittle and Dale are always SO incredibly polite to him and always give him the benefit of the doubt. I think they are both a bit scared of him and his crazy friends and I don't blame them. When you read about things like Ford's beat down on Lisi in Kathy's basement, and his face punch with fries to Belissimo, I think it's easy to realize how lucky Dale was to not get the life beaten out of him.

Visit my new kickstarter to take a beating to get a Ford arrested! I vow no musical, play, performance piece or documentary film will result! 10% of profits to fuck off burgerday and zombiewalk hashtags!

Who is that in RoFo's pipe?

Kinsella? Reinforcing my new idea that this is an illustrator from the fondly recalled old Frank Magazine.

20 years ago, maybe. Sun news is a harsh mistress...........
My vote is for Gawker guy Nick Denton. It's still very flattering hair, but...

Quite amazing to see what appears to be beer cans in the back on the full picture in the Warmington article.

I feel this is another preemptive article by the Worm. Not sure why Warmington felt compelled to explain the incident about pictures of Ford take on a dock at his cottage and quote Ford saying it is not taken at his cottage....maybe it was.

Per thread policy, I'm posting the Warmington text so no one else will give them page views.

My personal thoughts:
-not sure why they think a photo of him with his shirt off is a good lead. Plus it visually conveys his idea of rehab as a fun place to go. A serious photo of him in sweats and a t-shirt, sitting in a group (with other faces blacked out) would have done more to sell the idea he's actually working.

-seems obvious that a Canada Day campaign re-launch was the plan from the start. He already knows what time he'll be back in town? He already knows he has to go to the gym that morning first??! Indeed, he mentions workouts at least three times in there! He actually still thinks workouts and weight loss are the issue! He never mentions his addictions or hurtful actions in any over terms which, I'm no expert, that's up at the top of the 12-Steps list, isn't it?

His fixation on getting back to work (by which I mean, campaigning) doesn't sound like someone who has changed an iota in rehab. You'd think someone out of rehab would have learned there are more important things to confront than Chow, Tory and saving taxpayers' money.

-the way he kind of blames Old Rob Ford, promising we're going to see New Rob Ford doesn't sound like someone coming out of rehab; indeed it sounds exactly like the the same "that was in the past" guy we saw before, don't it? What about the guy who thinks St. Patrick's Day was "so long ago"? Does that sound like a changed man?

-"No one has enabled me," sounds awfully like something Doug would make sure he gets on the record with Wormy, doesn't it? Really, Rob? No one at all? Kathy didn't enable you by GIVING YOU CRACK after going on TV to tell everyone you're not an addict? This facility is awful forgiving of others.

I was 100% cynical about him going into rehab and never doubted it was timed to go with his campaign, as opposed to his health. That said, I thought a few weeks in a facility might actually wear off on him a bit; he might absorb one or two key new thoughts about himself. He sounds like he has 100% not learned a single thing and, for all my cynicism, I'm still kind of surprised and sad for the kind of person he is clearly destined to be.

(And, on a final related note, Warmington should read and re-read that final quote about him losing weight and putting on muscle and take a long, hard look in the mirror and consider what a pathetic excuse for a journalist has become. Is he getting paycheques from Diane Ford? Because selling his soul to her is about the only thing that could justify the shallow, biased, enabling, dishonest work that sustains his "career" these days. Him getting canned on Oct. 28 would be a real nice icing on the cake to Rob's departure.)

Mayor Rob Ford is hoping to make a big splash in the election campaign and put his first toe in the water Sunday.

On the one-month-anniversary of going into rehab, Ford said he’s “excited” about soon getting back to work and into the mayoral race.

“I can’t wait to come back,” he said. “I can’t wait to get in there and debate Chow and Tory.” And it won’t be long, he said, until he does.

But one day at a time.

“I will be back, I guarantee you,” he told me over the telephone from GreeneStone facility.

He said he “misses” the people of Toronto and is looking forward to trying to make amends for all that has happened in the soap opera surrounding him in the past year.

The mayor has some work to do when it comes to clearing up reported remarks that have been taken as homophobic, racist and misogynist. In the past, Ford has told me he did not even realize what was coming out of his mouth and that he was embarrassed with how it sounded on tapes I presented him.

He’s hoping for another chance.

“I am coming back and you will see a different Rob Ford,” he told me.

And he is already making plans.

“I will be leaving here at noon or so June 30 and be back for events July 1,” he said. “I want to have time for a workout first and say goodbye to some people here. When you spend this kind of time with people you develop some friendships. They have been very good to me. But I should be home for 4 or 5 p.m.”

Upbeat in tone, Ford said he misses his family and is anxious to come home.

“I was with my family on my birthday,” he said. “My wife and kids came up and we went out together to Crabby Joe’s. It was nice. It breaks your heart to have to say goodbye to them, so, yeah, that part has been a challenge.”

For now, he said, he is happy working at his rehab program in Muskoka and “getting better.” There is more work to do, he acknowledges.

As they say, recovery is a journey and not a destination.

“It is a good program. You learn a lot about yourself and about others,” said the mayor.

One of the things he has learned is how he got to this place in his life was his own doing.

“No one has enabled me,” he said. “We were talking about the enabling thing the other day in a meeting. You do booze or drugs because you want to do it.

“It’s a cop-out to blame it on others. No one has enabled me.” The program, he said, has given him a foundation for life without substances and plans are being made to help him once he leaves.

Easy does it.

“I still have 29 days to go and I am working at it. It has been very good here and the people at GreeneStone have been great,” he said, adding he has been concerned that his stay there has been a distraction for them and for others being treated. “I am very concerned about their privacy and their anonymity.” Ford knows all too well what his time in rehab has meant to potentially blowing that for them.

But live and let live.

“People’s privacy is important to them here,” he said, adding “it doesn’t matter” that someone would violate his as long as they don’t show anyone else in the facility.

The newest apparent breach of privacy is a photograph it is believed someone took of him on the dock of the facility, which is believed to now be in the hands of another newspaper. I phoned the mayor to ask about this picture, which was shown to journalists at the National Newspaper Awards in P.E.I. The suggestion by the person who told me about it was that it depicted the mayor enjoying a swim — perhaps at his family cottage.

“I have not been at my cottage,” Ford insisted. “I think what happened was someone may have taken a picture of me here by the dock.” He said he had an inkling because he heard a commotion from a distance.

“I was not wearing a bathing suit but my workout clothes. I had just had a workout and it was sunny so I decided to go down to the water here and catch some rays for a minute,” he said. “I just took my shirt off and was soaking wet from the workout but I did not take a swim.” Ford said when he learned a photographer was taking his picture by the lake, he decided he might as well take a dip at the facility’s pool, which he finally did Sunday.

“I don’t know why there is so much interest,” he said. “I am looking forward to talking about people wasting taxpayers’ money.” When he was in the pool, he said, a fellow resident snapped a picture on her cellphone.

“‘Is this the picture all the newspaper’s want,’ she joked to me and I said I guess so,” said Ford, who texted it to me, saying unlike those sneaking around the bush, “I give you permission to use this one.” He said he is hoping there will now be no more photographers skulking around the property.

Ford said the other residents have been understanding and they all support each other. He was also made aware of new media reports that a video was released of his alleged impaired behaviour on St. Patrick’s Day inside City Hall.

“It’s so old,” he said of the news. “I think they are grasping at straws.” He also wouldn’t talk about the incident in which a woman was charged for impaired driving while at the wheel of his Cadillac Escalade.

However, he said, he understands he must own his previous behaviour and improve his own act.

“I am definitely working at it,” he said. “I take full responsibility. I have learned my lesson.” He said he has been eating well in rehab and working out, and feels he has lost some fat off his stomach and built some muscle in his arms.

“I feel good,” he said. “You are going to see a difference. You are going to see a healthier Rob Ford and I am going to win the election on Oct. 27.”

He says his comeback to try achieve that starts officially on Canada Day.
