Rob Ford's Toronto

Err, Union Station revitalization? Getting the government to committ transit funding (BTW, where is Ford's privately funded Sheppard subway?). Revitalization of Regent Park? Relatively drama free governance without huge swings in taxes or services one way or another?

And of course character matters - why shouldn't it? So does competence. BTW, good leaders inspire - bad leaders divide and weakens the whole. Chew on that one for awhile if you want to equate our worship with the multitude of inspiring characters.

What the what???????

What are you....the new straw man arguing champ in town or something?

List Miller's successes.

Off the top of my head: Waterfront Toronto; Green Lane Landfill; making garbage an entirely rate-supported program; securing $8 billion from the provincial government for transit; Streets to Homes; new streetcars and subway cars; Regent Park redevelopment; cultural festivals like Nuit Blanche, LuminaTO and others; the removal of Julian Fantino and the subsequent improvements to the TPS; and still managing to grow the city despite lingering structural issues left over from amalgamation and Mike Harris.

I could also list some of his failures, if you'd like.

All of those were not Miller's accomplishments and it would be nice to give credit to the people who actually moved these ideas forward.

Um... what?? Those are absolutely Miller's accomplishments. There are many, many more as well.

Transit City and the Fort York plan are both his accomplishments that Jabba managed to screw up.

Like the revival of the Toronto City Airport which he ran his entire campaign against and which turned out to be a huge success story?

A months long garbage strike that was entirely unnecessary since he ended up caving to the unions anyway in the end.

Huge increases in user fees/taxes which showed his inability to balance a budget.

And so universally disliked by all but elite champagned socialists in the core of this city that he literally paved the way for that fat f*ck Rob Ford to take over. ;)

Um...what?? Do you have proof of that? I know people at the City of Toronto who presented and worked hard on those ideas. They deserve credit for them too.

So unnamed sources say he did and unnamed sources say he didn't.

What about all the other lies, i.e., it was dark when he spoke to Marg Delahunty (it wasn't), my daughter was scared (she was nowhere to be seen), he couldn't get in/out of his car (on the video you can see him getting in the car and getting out again).

Ahh come-on, its all BS..and this thread is the best place to spread it.

I need proof that Transit City was a Miller accomplishment and Ford screwed it up by killing it?

Are you high?

And good for them, so all of Ford's listed "accomplishments" (none of which are real accomplishments) deserve the same thing.

Juan: Absolutely, many of those accomplishments emerged with other people in council or in the community, but the mayor traditionally does get to share credit for such things. No slight was intended.

He ran his campaign against a bridge to the island airport. No bridge was ever built.

A months long garbage strike that was entirely unnecessary since he ended up caving to the unions anyway in the end.

The garbage strike lasted 40 days and ended when the union indicated they were willing to concede on the sick bank issue. Both sides moved from their original position, but it's hard to characterize losing a benefit they wanted to keep as a union victory.

Huge increases in user fees/taxes which showed his inability to balance a budget.

The budget was balanced every year. Toronto residents continue to pay less, on average, for property taxes compared to those in 905 communities. User fees were probably not increased ENOUGH under David Miller, as they're set to go up huge this coming budget year.

And so universally disliked by all but elite champagned socialists in the core of this city that he literally paved the way for that fat f*ck Rob Ford to take over. ;)

And I would, in fact, agree that his biggest failure was being unable to secure a legacy for himself.

You comments do not even reflect what I stated. No one is questioning things such as Transit City being a Miller accomplishment and Ford screwing it up. All I am saying is pat Miller on the back but also pat those around him who helped

His campaign was against the bridge - and that success happened without the fixed link.

A months long garbage strike that was entirely unnecessary since he ended up caving to the unions anyway in the end.

Err, the practice of banking sick days was discontinued for all new hires.

Huge increases in user fees/taxes which showed his inability to balance a budget.

Huge increases in user fees? Really, see how much they are going to rise under the tenure of this mayor? And just how much did taxes rise vis-a-vis inflation to justify the label "huge"?

Well the joke of course is on them now, considering how his popularity is going. Told you so.

JL416 -- One of my best friends is high up in the city. When he does something right, the Mayor takes credit. When he does something wrong, the Mayor gets blame. It's the nature of the beast -- civil service is not for those with egos that need stroking. You said that 'Miller didn't accomplish these things.' That's incorrect -- they happened because he was the Mayor. I'm sure other people worked hard to bring them to fruition, but the Mayor sets the agenda.
