I'm seeing some claims in the comments here that the Fords got some dismal polling results (sharp dropoff in support in what they thought were safe parts of Etobicoke and Scarborough), Doug is furious with Rob for wandering and going off script, and that's why you saw Doug and Dave with Rob last night and Doug on the air with him this morning.

Any other sources about these internal polls?

The last time someone became mayor with less than 40% of the vote was John Sewell in 1978. He won with 39% by splitting the right. Since then Toronto mayoral candidates have been incredibly paranoid about vote splitting.

However, even 39% of the vote would be a big stretch for Ford. Ford would be lucky if he got something like 34% of the vote. The last time a mayor won in Toronto with a percentage that low was Nathan Phillips, challenging incumbent (and appointed) mayor Leslie Saunders way back in 1954. Unlike Ford, Phillips was an unproven challenger who went on to become a hugely popular mayor. Ford is an incumbent mayor who has never been able to get his approval rating out of negative territory.

Had the same experience

Had the same experience too, multiple times, but not over Christmas dinner though. Makes you wonder. Polls say 60% won't vote for Ford, but, anecdotally, does that mean I keep running into the other 40%?? And I live downtown!!

Most we've seen of Randy in a very long time. Still wearing that bloody hat that makes him look like he just got off the set of "Deliverance". Sporting the same greasy, unpressed pants look that Rob likes to rock on occasion.

The internal polling they did recently sent a shockwave through the Ford campaign team. It showed that Ford had lost a great deal of support in what they thought were ridings they owned in Etobicoke and Scarborough. This resulted in there decision to open new campaign offices in both areas. There was a big screaming match between Rob and Doug over the results which pointed the culprit for the decline to be Rob's bar binges and drugs. They have implemented a new rule which is that Doug or David Price must be in attendance with Rob in any event outside of City Hall. We shall see how long it takes Rob Ford to lose his handlers for another bender.

Ford Campaign team commissioned a series of private polls and they got the results the beginning of this week and they did not look good for Ford. Doug is very upset and his desperation can be seen in his rants. Both Ford's were incredibly upset that Kouvalis would work for Tory they thought they had a deal that he would stay out of the election. Rob Ford reneged on the deal.

Since Mayor Ford's health is a topic of discussion, it is interesting to note that the last Toronto Mayor to die in office was Mayor Summerville in 1963.

"...we suspect the next person to lie in state within City Hall will be another mayor who is tragically unable to fulfill his or her electoral mandate."

He suffered a heart attack during a charity hockey match for flood victims in Italy ( he was scheduled to fly there the next day ) at the George Bell arena in the Junction. He was 48 years old.

"The mood during Summerville’s funeral became even more sombre after mourners heard the news out of Dallas that afternoon: John F. Kennedy had been assassinated."

"The fire department arrived about three-minutes after they were called, but because ambulances in the area were already on call, an ambulance had to be dispatched from Yonge Street at Davenport Road and didn't arrive until about 15 minutes after it was called, arriving at 8:55 p.m. At very high speed, he was rushed to St. Joseph Hospital in the High Park area, and died there at 9:05 p.m. Mayor Philip Givens, who succeeded Summerville, called for an inquest into why the emergency response was so slow. The inquiry into the emergency response to his death led to the creation of the Department of Emergency Services and the amalgamation of Metropolitan Toronto's various local ambulance services."
