Rob Ford's Toronto

All this talk of Cachet Ladies is giving me a deja vu from August, except that, in addition to the similarities I pointed out back in August (see below), I recall that Rahim Jaffer and Nazim Gillani were in the company of a number of "busty hookers" from Cachet Ladies when they had their infamous celebration at Harbour 60, where Gillani boasted that Jaffet had "opened up the Prime Minister's office" to their business and after which a drunk and coked up Jaffer blew through some hick town at 40 or 50 km over the speed limit.

so... i was reading up on this story, and when learning about club paradise, i found this...

Club Paradise regulars say this is a well-kept secret, hidden behind a discrete door in Bloordale, with service and quality almost as good as For Your Eyes Only or the Brass Rail. I say that these are good guys to know if you want to buy cheap furs or have your basement dug out without a permit.

i think the shady construction reference is interesting, considering the shady construction speculation that has gone on here.

Perhaps, up until the point where Dale identified himself and explained his purpose. At that point the only thing accounting for Ford's continued fist-raised rage was something completely exogenous - like, hmmm, say, a coke bender? The neighbour went quiet - i.e., refusing further comment or even corroboration of Ford's story - very soon thereafter, IIRC.

And they'd have to explain the photos showing the cinder blocks were moved.
And, more than a he said/he said thing, the cops could be called to testify to say they saw no evidence Dale climbed the fence, entered Ford's backyard or took any pictures whatsoever. More to the point, a cop could be called to say he reviewed Ford's own security footage, saw nothing and, I presume, told Ford that none of those things happened.

I don't think, "Well, I believe them anyway!" amounts to a libel defence, any more than Ford's singular definition of "conflict of interest," was.

I presume this doesn't actually get to court somehow.....but if it does, I don't like Ford's odds, not just because he's obviously lying, but because the police investigation will substantiate everything Dale has said. (I am curious if the police made a copy of the tape or just let Ford keep it, in which case it's obviously gone.)

(I also just appreciate the humour in how the Fords always threaten to sue people but they've never done anything. They just get taken to court by everyone else.)

Really, I'm mostly wondering why Ford is even doing this now. Surely he actually knows what happened so why drag it out? Why defend it having dragged it out? To draw the Star into a fight so you can campaign on how they're so biased they're suing you? That might play well with the moronic base still backing him, but won't win him any new people.

Libel case countdown, less than 48 hours for Ford to make a complete apology. Anyone want to set up a betting 'pool'

Who was at Club Paradise? Ford? They got rid of their sign, I do know that....

Not Ford. Nazim Gillani (Rahim's Jaffer's ex-business partner, who used to live around the corner from Ford) called Club Paradise his "office" and is rumoured to have brought business acquaintances there for meetings/blackmailable activities. The most-recent RoFo connection (other than the connections re: Central Etocicoke, right-wing politicians, cocaine, DUI, lenient treatment at the hands of the police, etc.) was that Cachet Ladies was reported to be Gillani's source for escorts, and IIRC was specifically named as the source of the "busty hookers" with whom Gillani and Jaffer partied at Harbour 60 on the night Jaffer got busted for DUI and coke possession.

Tough to set the guidelines on what would qualify as a "winning" apology from this guy. I'm guessing we're going to get a variant of:

"You want me to say sorry? Not sure why but sure I'll say the word... 'sorry'... does that count or are you going to keep bullying me? Gravy, Tax and Spend, Christmas... "

An apology, even if genuine and complete, would not prevent Dale from suing. At most an apology might lessen the damages that Dale might be awarded against Robinoccio to the extent that it was heard/read and believed by persons whose perception of Dale was poisoned by the defamation. Dale of course could decide not to sue following an apology, but that would be his decision and he could instead decide to carry on and sue.

I feel like this line from the libel notice sets the guidelines that they're going for.

ZoomerMedia and Rob Ford should immediately retract the false and deamatory statements in their entirety, and apologize to Mr. Dale – publicly, abjectly, unreservedly and completely – if they wish to even begin to undo the harm caused by the broadcast of Mr. Ford’s outrageous statements.

I'd at least hope that if Dale chooses to sue in the event that Ford tries to get away with a non-apology apology ("I'm so sorry that you thought I was insinuating that you were a pedophile."), the courts will come down hard on it.

Assuming the libel case makes its way before a judge, if Ford says he was relying in good faith on what his neighbours told him, is it possible his neighbours would be called to testify? Would Ford have a valid defence in saying 'I was just going by what my neighbours said about someone looking over my fence/being in my yard and I made a reasonable assumption that it was or could be a pedophile'?

I mean all of that would have been fine back in May 2012. You say that the neighbor described it a certain way... you had a testosterone/adrenalin rush, panic attack about pedos, etc... went crazy, didn't recognize Dale... whatever, sure we all get emotional & make mistakes.

But it's 19 months later! That's more than a cooling off period. And Vision/Zoomer should absolutely be held responsible, too. This was not a live show. They had a chance to edit and/or reshoot. We heard about the Star pulling or delaying stories because the lawyers had to go over everything... that Renata story that got posted early before they'd rephrased a portion of it. A professional media organization should know better.

Well he has already missed the deadline of "immediately" in the apology requirements.

Even worse, his brother continued the attack after the libel suit was presented.

It was your comment about "I know drug dealers who aren't that paranoid" (about being secretly recorded) that struck me. Because drug dealers who operate at a level that they need to think about being recorded are (I would think) further up the food chain than the person who sells small quantities to their friends and acquaintances. And you evidently know more than one dealer at that level, which strikes me as unusual. It has nothing to do with fitting stereotypes, just probabilities. There can't be so many dealers-at-that-level around that the average person knows a bunch of them.

Ah, I see.
Some of the higher ups have cycled through prison, but most are very smart...and, yeah, not really paranoid at all. The distribution networks are ridiculous, but even some higher ups who do their own sales are smart enough to avoid detection without resorting to patvdowns and mobile phone drops.

Really, Dixon Bloods type dealers are too loud and stupid to be effective.

PS: to this day it blows my mind that there are so many pharmacists clearing multiple thousand profits weekly. Where are all the customers?
Anyway, war on drugs: gigantic failure.
