It's a simple equation. Toll Rate X Number of Vehicles = Income. As you raise the tolls, # of vehicles drops; as you lower the tolls, # of vehicles rises.

They will keep raising the tolls and watching how many people stop taking the highway until the loss in ridership means they are losing money despite the higher tolls. At that point, they stop raising the tolls and wait until more people are taking the highway due to being fed up with congestion on non-toll routes. Then they raise the tolls again until the loss in ridership cuts into their income. Wash, rinse, repeat. Supply and demand 101.

That is the exact pricing/congestion model the NDP suggested they were going to use when they commenced construction.

I still remember the minister at the time being asked how he could describe the route as "express" and guarantee no congestion.....and him responding to the media (and I have to paraphrase) "if it gets too busy we will just raise the toll rates to discourage price sensitive users".

Tolls were always planned to rise to limit use.
 
Well, they had a staff report saying that this one was a bad idea. Can't fault them for commissioning a review and then accepting the reviwers' recommendations.

The reviewers aim was to determine it was a bad idea, essentially. The original project had determined that it was a good idea.
 
so what are they going to do now?!?!?! it's not like they have any money or spines to build an extensive transit network. The gta is fractured already as is....by doing nothing but debate and study
like the SSE disaster they are dooming the next generation with their ineptitude. looks they will just sit on their freakn hands and let the future govts decide on the fate of their grandchildren.....nice......

Urban Sprawl is a necessary evil. It's still going to happen, with or without highways.
 
Why would anyone in Brampton vote Liberal in the June election? They have canceled
this highway and they have not delivered on their GO promises.

That being said this announcement always seemed like a foregone conclusion after they started to drag their feet .

I wonder why they made this announcement now?

You're incorrectly assuming that everyone in Brampton supported the GTA West and will be disappointed to see this. That's not the case.
