RapidTO: Master Thread

And neither will their delivery trucks if stopping is prohibited, afaik. Do they have a loading dock? Is there laneway access to the businesses north of Bloor?

Yes, and…..yes. The smallest amount of research would do wonders for your ability to engage in this conversation.

New frontpage story up on the Bathurst streetcar lane installation, TDLR as of the 17th lanes were in from Lakeshore to Fort York Blvd
Whoever wrote the story might want to connect with the Gleaner which went originally with an opinion piece attacking the opposition ... to having to apologize in the subsequent issue. The edition after that featured letters to the editor complaining the paper was too one-sided! Had they tried a more nuanced approach all along, as opposed to taking an activist position at the outset, the community would probably be better served.

While I am in favour of dedicated bus lanes on Bathurst, I would note that the entrance to that laneway is very narrow. A sign says that no vehicle wider than two metres can pass. I'm not sure a delivery truck could make it in.

I too wish that us good common folk on Admiral Road could force all publications to tow the party line, but unfortunately our Ministry of Truth is still in it's early stages of development. We'll get em next year...

Have you ever worked in media, Jimmy? Lord preserve us if so. How about, "There's a proposal; here's why it's going ahead. There are objections; some have more merit than others. Overall the proposal's benefits outweigh its drawbacks." Then let the readers reply one way or the other. Where do you get that this amounts to censorship? Maybe you need to read 1984 again.

I was down by Bathurst and Wellington today and noted the red 'paint'.......I also noted the VOCs it was emitting. (Volatile Organic Compounds). It wasn't freshly laid, not sure when they did this section....

Usually the smell isn't noticeable past a week or so of curing.

I noted that it didn't smell like paint; and I knew it wasn't, but couldn't remember what product they were using, so I checked.

Its this:

Very nasty stuff

Shouldn't pose any material health risk once cured and the most intense smells have abated...but you want to using top notch PPE if you're applying it.

BlogTO (yes, I know) has picked up the above and residents along Dufferin have been up in arms over the smell/odor, the state of thew work site, and the fact that some workers on site were in full PPE with respirators, but locals weren't given any warnings to so much as close their windows.

For the record here, the Guild Workers were following appropriate precautions. I do not accept the idea that a worker on-site requires PPE, but someone whose window is 10 or 20m away should not be told to close their window, and if they have respiratory issues, to consider sleeping elsewhere if feasible.

I also consider leaving the drums filled w/MMA open to the air when not in use poor practice.

The smell is extremely unpleasant, and I think its fair to say, at least a moderate risk with close or prolonged exposure. I'm fine w/its use, but the City should better inform residents/businesses and schools and take more care w/its site.

Makes me wonder if this smell situation also happened when the RapidTO lanes were installed on Eglinton East back in 2020? If so, the TTC needs to come up with a solution to mitigate this problem with all future RapidTO projects.

There's a difference between occupational exposure 250 days a year, than incidental exposure a couple of days, every few years.

This would be similar to how you don't see professional cleaners using the same products that we use in our own homes.

Sure, but I've been around this stuff, the smell is noxious even at a distance; and I read the actual guidance and posted much of it above as well.

If you think its fine to expose people to that w/o notice, you're wrong and we disagree.

This pisses me off. My son goes to school a block away from there.

The workers aren't wearing respirators because it smells. Much of the stuff you wear respirators has a sweet smell!

I've never smelled it though - and really haven't heard about this issue before. I'm merely commenting about the PPE selection and the odour issue. If it smells like shit, then yeah, it might be necessary. But I don't see pig farmers notifying neighbours before they apply the stuff.
