Novel Coronavirus COVID-19 (nCoV-2019)

Seeing the empty streets during Andrea Bocelii’s performance just seemed like such a stark contrast to what I see in my area. There are more strict lock down procedures in France and Milan of course.

Spain has started to relax on their lockdown with some businesses beginning to reopen. Although restaurants, bars and public spaces will remain closed until April 26.

Police are also handing out free face masks at public transit stations.

They seem to be on a downward trend.

I really believe we are 2 weeks tops from hearing about a slow relaxation of restrictions in Canada, especially regionally. PEI hasn't reported a case in 5 days, New Brunswick is barely reporting any, and BC/Alberta have very stable numbers. I imagine those provinces at least can relax restrictions, at least somewhat, very soon.

Hopefully Ontario isn't far behind as case counts begin to decline. Hopefully by early May cases will be steadily declining and they can start to let up on restrictions, even if things are still generally "not normal". Maybe the city will start to actually accept development applications again and UT can get back to normal at least ;)

13M surgical masks, 200K N95 masks, and 38 ventilators delivered to Ontario

Ontario announced an increase in medical supplies for healthcare workers on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic, with 13 million surgical masks delivered to the province over the last five days.

On Monday, Premier Doug Ford said in addition to the masks, 200,000 N95 respirator masks and 38 ventilators have been delivered to Ontario’s pandemic stockpile warehouses.

“The global competition to secure critical personal protective equipment and medical supplies is fierce, yet our team of procurement specialists continues to locate the masks, gloves and ventilators we need to keep our frontline workers and patients safe,” Ford said.

Ontario is also providing same-day deliveries to hospitals, long-term care and retirement homes, and other facilities to support essential workers in all settings and ensuring supplies and equipment are expedited to those most in need.

This includes shipments this past weekend of 6.5 million surgical and procedural masks to over 650 providers across the province.

The R-factor (reproduction rate) for the virus now appears to at about 1 or just a smidge over. Below 1, one should expect to see declining numbers of new cases each day. Nothing of course is fact until its happened, but modelling would indicate Ontario will be over-the peak by later this week.

I said to people earlier today that they can only extend this thing for so long before people begin to ignore it.

While I personally appreciate the need for a state of emergency the simple fact is you can only limit peoples movements and the operation of businesses for so long. Seniors need to go to the bank, people need haircuts and nobody will willingly be cooped up in the house for months on end.

People will leave and they will gather outside rather than be stuck inside for months on end. Short of putting troops on the street and instituting a national lockdown there is no way to prevent it.

I like the way Doug is handling this but somethings gotta give soon otherwise people will tell him and everyone else making decisions where to go.

Coronavirus: what’s behind Vietnam’s containment success?
I don't trust what totalitarian governments have to say.

Then more will die. I agree with your point though.

Maybe giving a date where some constraints will begin relaxing will help people see this through to the end without breaking social isolation. Easier to make decisions with a known timeline rather than an unknown one.

That's exactly it. I am currently attempting (with some level of futility) to plan a vacation for later in the year post-pandemic and it would help to know what their thought process is.

Vacation not withstanding, it would likely help ease supply chain issues if we knew what the parameters for and likely end date of the state of emergency are. If people know that the end is near, they wont stockpile dihydrogen monoxide for example.

Or, we can ignore the rules and end up like Italy with even more rules. Even if business begins to open up a bit, we won't be gathering in large groups for a while yet.

That's true but people need more entertainment than Netlix can provide. For that reason alone I can see the CNE proceeding as planned.
