Novel Coronavirus COVID-19 (nCoV-2019)

Back in the beginning of all this (like, a month ago), I went to get some regular groceries. Eggs were wiped out. Someone told me it was because chickens could catch the virus so we wouldn't have eggs. Um, ok, but you can't stockpile eggs.

Fortunately, I've been an online shopper for years and apart from missing choosing my own produce, I've done everything online. I ventured out once, and it was such a stressful experience that I haven't done it again.

Fortunately, I've been an online shopper for years and apart from missing choosing my own produce, I've done everything online. I ventured out once, and it was such a stressful experience that I haven't done it again.

I stockpiled toiletries but only because they are harder and harder to come by. I now have a months supply of Nivea products.

Eggs have been reasonable for me, I'm west of downtown in the Davenport & Lansdowne area. Although I would say Food Basics does tend to run lower on stock than Freshco. The latter seems to keep things steadier no matter what the item is.

It’s weird. Buying patterns have dramatically changed and the usual supply chain flow is having trouble keeping up and catching on with the new patterns.

Last week, I couldn’t for the life of me find eggs anywhere. I went to 6 stores downtown, including a few Shoppers, Loblaws and some local mom and pop stores. Everyone was out. Outside of downtown, I was told there was plentiful supply.

There doesn’t seem to be a problem with egg supply, just predicting where shipments need to go.

After you posted about your problems w/eggs, I thought of Farm Boy, since they don't sell TP or Wipes..........and tried them out; I saw eggs and grabbed a dozen.

They were well stocked (3 days ago), Leslie/Lakeshore location.

After the initial panic buying surge, items that are now steadily in stock again at the stores near me are rice, pasta, sauce, canned beans, and tuna. Even bread a few weeks ago had some bleak days. But that's normalized now.

Not too many issues with fresh produce, apart from a couple trips where I couldn't get onions and oranges at Food Basics. Although Freshco was luckily better stocked overall.

Pretty sure I've seen oil (don't remember if necessarily canola though) and bleach available near me.

TP and paper towels seems to go in cycles. They do replenish every few days. But I have plenty already.

Wipes are pretty much universally gone in stores. I have a decent amount at home, and for my parents too. I was luckily enough to order some more from Bed Bath & Beyond online a few days ago.

Sanitizer and hand soap refill I'm good on that. Same with laundry and dish wash detergent for a while. Also stocked up a bunch of body wash and shampoo earlier to avoid having to go to a gongshow place like Wal Mart. Shoppers also have sales periodically.

Dollarama was also good for sponges and more basic cleaning gloves and items.

I found Frescho had been better myself. But today they were the ones w/no Canola, No chicken broth, no Squeeze bottles of vinegar, No Paper Towels, and None of the Air-Chilled Chicken either. Yah, yah, I can get the water-chilled stuff and the world won't end.........but only if I have to! LOL I hate rubbery-chicken.

I'm done with the big grocery stores until this mess is over. I went last week and it was stressful, too many people ignoring the social distancing rule and ignoring the one-way arrows on the aisles.
Costco has been good, They sanitize the carts and let maybe 50 people in the whole store at a time.

I would hope by July or August we have this under control, but I appreciate the larger events need to make commitments and plans well in advance.

That has me thinking about the CNE. I wonder what the latest they can sort this out is?

I doubt they can wait until July or August given when they start hiring and when thing like the casino begin to open.

The CNE can turn on a dime. Not saying it’s not complicated but having sat on the board of directors of the CNE, I know that decisions on acts and even an entire midway provider can change a lot later in the process than you’d think.

I imagine that they’re still planning for it now, even in a diminished version with the midway rides and games, vendors and perhaps some outdoor show. The skating show in the Colosseum and the indoor shows with an audience like the dog and cat show, are probably not being planned. The Food building is probably cancelled. Outdoor concerts at the bandshell? Maybe, but perhaps with a limited seating capacity, or no seating.

The CNE is essentially a collection of many individual shows and entertainment along with a midway, vendors and food. Very little of it is purpose designed for the CNE. They just plug in those existing elements to form something larger.

I’ll leave the Airshow for last because who knows what the world will look like in 5 months. If the situation in the US deteriorates to the point where hundreds of thousands are dying and on the brink of societal collapse, people will be weary of any military demonstrations. I personally love the air show and it’s something that can entertain the entire city while everyone is home but this might be what kills it, at least for this year.

Although I tend to shop mostly at Rabba across the street on Charles (at 5 am - I'm usually alone in there!), I go to Bloor St. Market every 8 to 10 days; they seem well-organized, they sanitize everything constantly and try to not let too many people in at a time, but it's still difficult to keep your distance in some areas due to the odd layout. They are quite well-supplied.

I try to avoid the LCBO; I have ordered wine from Tawse. They have great stuff of course, but also they deliver quickly by courier and not by Canada Post, which no longer delivers alcohol; you have to pick it up at the post office, not a place where I want to line up these days.

The RCAF has suspended the Snowbirds training and cancelled shows until the end of April - for now. Hopefully, they will be allowed to reactivate and continue with some later shows. Many of their smaller shows are volunteer-organized and may not be as resilient (and if they are not regular hosts, can't draw on past experience). Also, liability insurance is a huge issue with smaller hosts. As well, even if appearances resume, the CF-18 demonstration aircraft will not have it's traditional unique paint job this year. I don't know if that means it will be last years livery or just grey. I don't remember if the CNE is typically on its schedule.

Interesting article in the G&M. I'm a big fan of emergency preparedness and contingency planning, but it traditionally slides off the table in the face of funding pressures and more immediate political issues. Like many aspects in life, it loses its allure over time.

Mr. S went to the Bulk Barn last weekend (the one at Yonge and Carlton). They only take 4 people at a time. Customers must Purell and glove up as soon as they enter. Then each is assigned a personal shopper (with Purell and fresh gloves). Customers aren't allowed to touch anything. Same personal shopper then cashes you out. I wasn't too worried about the food, as it was all spices to be cooked.
